My most recent project on the table has been the 4Ground Bank. Now, I have a lot of complaints about the bank, including all of the fershlugginer interior walls and how nothing seemed to line up properly so I had to do tons of trimming and filing and sanding. But I soldiered on, and got everything completely finished except for the windows. The cursed windows. 4Ground windows are a particular pain for me, I can never seem to get them to line up correctly, and they require a ton of trimming and I will inevitably break one of the frames while trimming it down. A couple of the windows in Rogan's Bar are all warped. It looks like the glazier in the town of Zenda is a drunkard (which he may very well be.)
My buddy Tommy was over last night for a boardgame, and we got to talking about the bank and how I hated doing the windows. I explained to him in great detail about how much of a pain it is to cut the acetate, and get the frames lined up just right, and all of the trimming because it's never quite perfectly square.
Then he says, "Now I've never actually built one of these kits before, but it seems to me if the fit is that precise, you could glue the interior half of the frame into the building, let that dry, and then drop the "glass" into the slot, and then glue the other frame into the building on top of that. Wouldn't that work?"
I stood there gawping at him for a few moments as the idea sunk in. Couldn't tell if he was a genius or a madman. Until I had a chance to try his method tonight. And gentlemen, he was a genius. I did the back three windows of the bank, and it took me about 10 minutes to do all three (not including a 5 minute drying time for the inner frame), and they came out great!
And that, gentlemen, is how I learned to stop worrying and love the windows. Sassy Gal, you're next!
