First attempt at a British Rifleman
« on: February 23, 2015, 06:27:46 PM »
Over the weekend I finally found the right combination of time & motivation to pick up a paintbrush & finish off this little chap, who’s been languishing on my painting stand for several months, & I thought I’d share the results.

He’s a test figure to make sure my colours, techniques, etc will work for the Special Duties Detachment of the Royal Sussex Regt that I’ve got planned.  Overall I’m quite happy with how he’s turned out (the face needs a bit of tidying up methinks, this extreme close-up isn’t overly flattering).  However, I’m not sure if the Blue (trousers, helmet, etc) is a bit too light.  Should I try to make it a darker shade of navy?  (Any other hints, tips or suggestions will also be gratefully received.)

He looks excellent! I would say a slightly darker colour especially on the helmet and trousers might be beneficial although I'm no expert. I think, especially of a specialist unit of your own creation, you could probably use any colours you like though so its completely up to you.
Good luck with the project

Thank-you for the compliments.  Bloefeld, your concurrence is the reassurance I was looking for; I'll go for a darker shade of blue with the next one & see how he turns out.

I'm aiming for a reasonably accurate representation of the Royal Sussex Regt, rather than a completely bespoke specialist unit with their own uniform.  (Short version, a bunch of Royal Sussex Riflemen have been seconded to protect/reinforce the old Regimental Colonel's daughter whilst she cuts about seeking vengeance on what is probably le Cabinet Noir, who murdered her mother when she was a child - see this thread from over a year ago for the long version: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=61803.msg742288#msg742288)

Here's the first 'proper' figure, based up for gaming.  I'm still not convinced the blue is quite dark enough, but I think any darker may start to look too black, so I'll probably live with how I've got it on this chap.  This figure (& his compatriots sitting on the painting table) are from the new Queen & Country range (http://www.queenandcountryminiatures.co.uk/home.html), which are rather splendid little figures.  (I just need to convince them to do a set with arc rifles.)

Only 7 more to go, then I can get started on the ladies that prompted my excursion into steampunk/VSF & led me to IHMN.
