Pete's Flags Banners
« on: March 22, 2015, 03:06:58 AM »
I love hand painting banners, but I must confess that it really slows down the process of completing armies because it takes me so long. The problem is I already have several dozen standards hand finished and most "pre-printed" types come up short both in quality and in the pantone of the finish. so they don't mix well already finished stuff. For a long time I just muddled along, but a couple of winters ago I started following Painterman's blog and noticed he had beautiful banners in a style I thought would work really well with what I was doing. So following along I got turned on to Pete's Flags. Pete really does beautiful work. So now I patiently follow his postings and wait for Pete to make a batch of banners I can use. (Kinda hoping he revisits Burgundians and expands his Yorkist offerings soon)

They're so good its difficult to tell hand painted from pre-printed. See for yourself. (the one on the left is "Pete's Flags". The one on the right I painted).

Cheers,
Fred

He tends to have a larger selection on E-bay. I found them by searching for "28mm cloth flags" I've got some of the French ordinance/early italian wars flags and they are really nice.

Nice flags, but rubbish site, most of the entries are "not found".

Actually, Darrell.

I follow your blog too! (beautiful stuff!)  :-*

about sourcing: Pete's Flags is pretty much only reliably available on Ebay. He doesn't seem to support his website store anymore. I should also caution that he seems to work in limited runs (he doesn't do large volume work so each purchase is a treat to get a hold of.)

I only hope I'm not shooting myself in the foot because I'll now have to vie with more folks for limited numbers of flag sheets!

 ;D

Cheers,
Fred

I see.

So are the flags pictured above cloth or paper? (Paper, I'm guessing - unless the cloth is a very much finer weave than most of the cloth flags I've seen before... )

The banner I painted on the right is simple printer paper. Pete's Flag's uses as high quality printer friendly cloth (the kind that takes well to cutting with an Xacto). I tried printing my own banners before but the printable cloth paper I was able to get my hands on was much inferior. When I cut it, the paper would start to unravel at the edges. So the quality of the materials he uses really enhances the overall product.

Cheers,
Fred

Yeah, as well as a small business it is Pete's hobby.

I think you're on fairly safe ground mate  :)

Hi, thanks for the comments on my flags and I have gotta agree with Nord's comments on my store. As I'm not a big fan of pre printed flags my goal was to produce flags that looked hand painted and would match my figures so as you could imagine I'm especially pleased with Fred's comments.

I usually place completed flagsheets for sale on ebay however I keep promising that I'll sort out the webstore someday, unfortunately I keep getting distracted and have never got round to it; I can be contacted easily enough though via my blog or by email.  I do paint the flags as a hobby and that is reflected in the several sets I have ongoing at the moment and these include more Tudor, early condottieri and French commanders for the Italian Wars, Yorksts, Burgundian, Valois Habsburg wars and flags for the early period of the French Wars of Religion.

Cheers Pete
