2 towers 2 hours. Now with Wizard Tower WIP
« on: 10 April 2015, 11:15:32 AM »
So I was putting my daughter to bed and had a brainwave about how I could use my base stamp that I created out of instamold. I had always though it would be great as a wall texture but I suddenly realised that the stamp is very flexible and can go around corners so I decided to make a round tower. After looking under the laundry sink full of old containers I found two suitable containers for towers. Small plastic jam jars.

So I got some sandpaper, peeled off the labels and roughed up the outside so it would take the glue better (I hope)

Then I used my base stamp and spread some of my cheap airdry clay out on it.

Then I wrapped this around the jam jar

It fit nicely halfway so I had to do it twice per tower. This was superfast by the way. Only about 10 minutes to do a tower this way.

The texture came out nice but I had a small gap, which was fine as this is where the door was going to go anyway.

Next I created the doors out of a worm of clay (Unfortunately one of the worms looked on as his friends were turned into doorways.

Then onto the roofs made out of iceblock sticks

Some trapdoors on the roof

And some doors, with handles (that look rubbish)

And they are finished. Two towers, two hours (Sorry to those expecting a LOTR thread :) ) I had to sculpt some detail where the stonework was a bit soft.
I'm not too sure how well they will stick to the jam jars. Worst comes to worst I take them off that and use up a bunch of the polystyrene offcuts from my cave system to attach them to. Still for a couple of hours (if that) I'm pretty happy with the results so far. Tomorrow I'll spray, wash and drybrush.

I'll have to put an extra line of clay as it shrunk a little during drying. Nothing terrible though. The sun is out so they are drying rather quickly now.

This looks like a great system for building structures with a stone or block texture.

I am looking forward to seeing the recent additions to these towers.

Please give us a little more information on the production and use of "...base stamp that I created out of instamold."  A photo or two would also be a big help.
Thanks, Curt

Thanks for the interest. Here's the thread about the base stamp

I spray painted them last night so next I need to just wash and dry brush and they are done. Except for the top of the towers.

Final result. I should base these properly and I also want to give them a proper roof but maybe I'll just make a tall wizard tower and do it on that. I have a spare pringles box for it :)

Started making a wizard tower. The stonework is a bit rough on this. I think I need to get a lot more instamold to make the mold more solid and with deeper recesses.

I'm going to get some expanding foam to fill them up and hopefully that will combine it all together. I'm going to try tiled roofing on this.

I filled them with expanding foam and then used skewers and hot glue to put them together. Now I need to do the undersides of the upper tower , put a balcony and door on top of the pringles container the roofing and some windows. I have bought some brid skull pendants which should arrive relatively soon to decorate the balcony with. And then mounting it on a base of some sort to make it less tumbly.

Wonderful, like that a lot! All the more, because I think having a similar clay in my "for later use"-box.
I have some suggestions, though. Due to the strange geometric look of that wizards tower there should be some shoring, stringer or beam if not working with magic is intended. Maybe under the "upgrades" as well.
Then, ivy or something green at the walls would look just fine, maybe not on the smaller ones.

Last very important question, before I start planning ... did You got rid of that worm? Was it hostile or could You tame it? Where is the battle-report? Question and questions ... ;)

thanks for sharing

Lol, the worm is now terrorising the landfill.
I had intended to put some shoring under the towers. Forgot that in my last "things to do list" I think I mentioned it earlier. Ivy etc is also planned after painting :) great minds...

Further progress. Still need to do the supports underneath. I'm still deciding on whether to keep it stone looking or having wooden support beams.
Balcony top still to be completed. Along with the base and the doors.
