Gladiator Arena & Grid
« on: October 04, 2008, 05:15:39 AM »
I am currently working on a Gladiator Arena but have the Gladiator Grid finished for the Arena.

The purpose or reason to have a gladiator grid is to have a bigger area to have more fights outside the arena.
The gladiator grid is also used when the Gladiator Arena is used.

Here is a picture of the Gladiator Ring that is made of Styrofoam.  First I had to cut out all the hexes for the arena so that it could be layed on the Styrofoam and pasted onto the Styrofoam.  Next, the hex pieces were painted with a Brown Sable (by Americana - acrylic) paint and then the spaces between the hexes were painted black.  After that, a Sandy sand (flock) was applied to the hexes.  Since, the Styrofoam was blue in the first place the bottom of it was painted black and the sides.  A friend of mine actually did most of the painting & the rest of the gladiator grid.  I just cut out all the hexes!

I bought a Gladiator Arena from Amazon and it looks like this.  This is how it first looked like-

I first started painting the gladiator arena with black.  It was a Krylon Fusion For Plastic
Textured spray can.  I used nearly 4 cans of the black paint!  It is the 'flat' paint and not the 'glossy' kind.
It took 2 times to make sure the Playmobil was fully sprayed on the inside and the outside.

The next step, was painting the whole Gladiator arena the color Brown Sable (by Americana - Acrylic),
and then the next step was painting the whole gladiator arena the color Country Tan (by Apple Barrel - Acrylic).

You can see the Brown Sable color on the 3rd piece going clockwise of the gladiator arena. Check this out -

As you can see the stands for the arena have been painted but seem to be dry brushed a 'lighter' touch.
I think that is what happened.   The gladiator arena as you can see I have painted Brown Sable and in this picture you should be able to see the Country tan.
And the rest of the arena has Country Tan...
Check it out -

I'm currently working on the front part of the arena where you walk in.
Currently with the Gladiator Arena , I'm painting the 3rd color for the Arena.
It is called Antique White (by Americana-Acrylic).
It makes the Arena look more sandy looking I guess.  Some say it does.
Here is a picture of the Pillars that has the 3rd color applied to it. -

You can find the 40mm Gladiators and animals here that I use with my Gladiator Arena & Grid -

Cool!
Everytime I see this arena in our mall, I'm tempted to buy it! Might do so sometime! May I ask for a comparison shot with a 28mm Miniature?!

Sheerluck:
Checked amazon, the diameter is 84cm, price is around 80 Euro.

The size is perfect, but the price is wrong. The cheapest i can get it here in Australia is $145.

I did find one for $39 in the US, but they don't do mail order to Australia.

I will keep my fingers crossed that they come down in price  ;D

Stéphane

Currently I'm using Arena Games.

Here is their link - http://home.rochester.rr.com/ridgerunners/index.html

I have found these rules the best to use!

I also, have Red Sand: Blue Sky, Habet Hoc Habet, Gladiators, Kick Him In the Cataphracts!, and BRUNCH.
I found Red Sand Blue Sky with too many tables and some of it was like wow (the information to follow could be hard to undersand).  With Habet Hoc Habet and I was looking towards using these rules for playing Gladiators, but the rules were too long, and LOTS of tables to use!   In fact, I started to rewrite the rules for Habet Hoc Habet when a friend of mine who did the Gladiator Arena and helped me get started painting my arena showed me Arena Games.  He played it at Historicon 2007.  He said he has so much fun!
As far as the other rules well Kick Him In The Cataphracts and Brunch had only a few pages of rules and wasn't that interesting at all to me to use.

Hope this helps.

p.s I looked at your link and yes that is the same Gladiator Arena I bought.

Hello

When I put it on the gladiator grid and measured it, it says - 33 " (inches).  That is from the front of the entrance to the other side.  Actually it looks like - 33 1/2" (inches)

How much does it cost for one of these Playmobil Gladiator Arenas? well, I got it cheaper at Amazon when they had it on sale.  It goes for $94 at Amazon right now. Here is the link for Playmobil Gladiator Arena at Amazon - http://www.amazon.com/Playmobil-4270-Arena/dp/B000EMFAUO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=toys-and-games&qid=1223194126&sr=8-1

Hope that helps!

Hello there!

Well I don't have any 28mm miniatures to show you a comparison shot.  A real bummer huh...

But I can show you a picture of what I have to give you an idea of a Playmobil Gladiator in the arena and a 40mm Gladiator.

Here is a picture -

the height on the rules says 3 1/2 " (inches), and you can tell the Playmobil gladiator behind the 40mm Elephant.

Sorry, that the picture is a little blurry.

Hope this helps get an idea.  Maybe one of these days I will borrow a 28mm gladiator or 28mm miniature from someone and check that out.
