There's an unboxing of StarWars Armada over on Tabletop Gaming News today

I like the ships, but doubt I'd ever play the game...

I play it once a week. I am addicted to it. I see no cure. I don´t want any either.

I need more ships...

Welcome to the Dark Side...  ;)

Orders in Armada do NOT decide how a ship moves, but confers some tactical bonusses. Actual movement is decided by the player controlling the ship, based on the current situation, the ship's speed, and its maneuverability (using a special ruler that can be altered in a number of ways, depending on the aforementioned factors). The bigger ships have to (currently) order 1, 2, or 3 Game Rounds ahead (depending on size), so outguessing a Star Destroyer (3) is all but impossible.

I started playing a solo game before Darth Lea called me out for a battle, and I think it can be quite enjoyable. Not the same as playing a live opponent, but still a treat to try getting the most out of the options available to the ships/fleets.

UM tell me more.... sounds good, perhaps we could play by pm/webcam?

That could be possible...

For a play-by-webcam the person hosting the game should probably rig a (preferably movable, depending on the size of the table) cam over the playing area... hmmm... have to ponder a bit about that...
Ask at the LAF, and answer shall thy be given!

While the starter contents are a lot of fun, I think you'll quickly find that you want more ships. Exactly what you should get is pretty much up to you, in my experience so far all of the expansions are fun enough. A second starter is good value, but doesn't expand your diversity at all, whereas getting the individual X-Wing and TIE fighter give you some new pilots and cards.  Most Wanted, Imperial Aces, and Rebel Aces are also nice ways to expand with a few ships at a time, new scenarios, and new upgrades.

Yes I thought so. I'll have to hope they make an app....

The Tineside Wargames club has a decent solo set-up which randomizes NPC ships' behavior based on the direction of the nearest enemy (they also have a really similar set-up for Wings of Glory).

For X-Wing, there's also this site: X-Wing Miniatures AI

Having used the former, and not yet the latter, I can at least say of that one that it is no substitute for a real, thinking opponent, but it is still quite a bit of fun.

Agreed, I don't personally see a lot of value in X-Wing if you'd only be playing solo games.

I break them out every now and then, when I've got the house to myself and friends aren't available/I'm feeling misanthropic, but otherwise a real person is much more fun to play with.

There's nothing like seeing the dismay on your opponents face when you manage to pull off that gamble and manoeuvre your fighter 2mm from his Corvette not crashing into it.
No webcam can transfer that ;D

On the onter hand, it also doesn't transfer the feeling you get when you notice you've selected the wrong side for your turn and crash into it and said opponent is under the table, laughing his ass off...  o_o

Don´t forget the bad feeling you get when it comes to movement and you realize that you completely forgot about that asteroid in your path at the time you "programmed" your maneouvre.
And of course the laughter that this causes on the other side of the table...

In my earliest games, after the initial pass I would frequently turn in the wrong direction by mistake whenever my ships were facing me.

Um, any idea of one-player-ability for either game?

Actually, someone made a simple set of AI rules for 'the other side', and reports are the fan-based solitaire is pretty good. I know the author posted on TMP. I'll give a look.

Edit: 'Herkybird' of the Tyneside Wargames Club did the deed.

the OP might be interested to know Steam is currently having a sale on the star wars flight sim series. While not the TT game it might fill that Star Wars void.

I know, I saw that. If I had a joystick I would buy X-Wing Alliance again at a shot. It was excellent.

I've been using X Wing solo with Herkybirds solo adaptions and they work well http://tynesidewargames.co.uk/xwingrules.html

So I might well go for some solo play on this to scratch that itch

So I had a quick look on various sites and just wondered if all the cards come with the ships or if you have to track down boosters and such?

Thanks

Nope, the cards are in the ship packs.
