[Wich producer?] Cold War Soviets
« on: October 06, 2008, 02:02:52 PM »
Hey guys,

I´ve been out of the hobby for a while due to a lot of work at school (my secondary-school examination is in January).

Now I have holidays and started painting some old Vor:The Mealstorm Neo Soviets. These are way to Sci-Fi for WW2 so I started a Wierd-Cold-War project (I know that this is the WW 1-2 board, but on the one hand WW2 officially ended 1990 when the united Germany signed and on the other hand I didn`t find a better sub-board to post it  ::)).

Now I need some 28mm regular Soviets with AK 47´s or RPG`s to back up the Uber-guys.

What producer makes such things? Another problem is that I`m going for a winter camoflage so the most Afghan war-soviets won`t fit...

Thanks to all answers

List of 28mm usable Cold War Soviet-Miniatures

Copplestone Neo-Soviets, Partisans and BoB Bolshevik Commissars/Command
(Mongrel)
Artizan Thrilling Tales
(Chiltern -> WW2)
Westwind Seperate-Head-System WW2 & SOTR Russians with weaponswaps
Eureka Bio-Hazard 1980`s Soviets
(Black Tree Design WW2)

Oh thank you!

The Copplestone ones are quite briliant. I think they size perfect to the VOR-miniatures (both are on the big and bulky side of 28mm, I assume?)
Are the BoB-Bolsheviks scaled same? The Sibirian rifles and Kommissars could be useful or a Wierd Cold War setting too...

The Mogrel ones are good, too. How do they size up? I see, they have even East-German troops  :-* and also interesiting Support- and Airbornesoviets and Tank crews...

Ral Partha still have some fo the VOR range

https://www.connectstores.com/ralpartha/sp_16741.html

The games workshop Ice Warriors of Valhalla are a good match too though I think OOP you may be able to pick them up on e-bay etc

Chiltern have some big figures in their WW2 range of Ruskis, maybe a little too big

Frothers have a nice little showcase which may be of use too

I thought a bit about all the miniatures available to use:

Command:
Copplesone Neo-Soviets and BoB Bolshevik Commissars/Command
VOR: Commander
You-Know-That-Company Valhallan Commissar/Vostroyan Command group
Artizan Thrilling Tales
Westwind SOTR Commissars

Core Infantry:
Copplestone Neo-Soviets and Partisans, maybe Bolsheviks (with bolt-action rifles  :`)
(maybe Mongrel? Think they won`t mix up well....)
Chiltern for beefed-up test-tube Soviets  ;)
Artizan Thrilling Tales Sibirians
Westwind Seperate-Head-System WW2 & SOTR Russians with weaponswaps
Eureka Bio-Hazard 1980`s Soviets

Elite Infantry:

Urban War VASA Suppressors with Gauss rifles (look like some sort of AK though)
Urban War VASA Suppressor with sniper rifle ( -> Kremlin secret special guard)
You-Know-That-Company Valhallans (Russians with experimental railguns  ;D)
(Converted?) Pig Iron Rebel Infantry

Kremlin Honour Guard:
You-Know-That-Company Vostroyans

Power Armoured Elite Infantry:
VOR: Neo-Soviets (Vanguard, maybe VOR-Spetznaz)
Warzone Sons of Raspution when I get some... hard to find these days  :'()
Warzone Northern Sons
Pig Iron Colonial Infantry -> Headswaps

Soviet Science gone crazy:
VOR Mutants, Mutant Handler and Cyclops (Well, I need some Cyclops, they are quite cool, thanks for the hint with Ral Partha, I got mine few Neo-Sovs by a friend of mine but I have no Cyclops at the moments)
Some other Mutants, i`ll find something when I search for it
Maybe GW-Orks with Westwind-SOTR-Heads and LMG`s as Russian Supersoldiers
Some of the Urban War Vasa Battlesuits?
Westwind SOTR Sibirian Subhumans

Something like Tesla Trooper:
Dunno. Any suggestions? I`m afraid I`ll have to convert some...

Tanks:
All sorts of Soviet Tank kits in 1/48 or 1/56 scale...  1/48 will fit cause all miniatures I`m going to use are somewhat bulky and big  :?

Soviet Super Heroes:
Westwind Supersystem Red Patriot Movement

As you see, there are enough options for such a project, but I`m afraid I still lack of options for core troops. There are only about 25 different Soviets by copplestone...

Black Tree Design produces cheap WWII Soviets. If they are in scale they would be a great source for artillery and SMG-Troops as well as Tank crews and special weapons. Has anyone got experience how well they mix with Copplestone or comparison pics? Haven`t found one yet but this picture
(http://agisn.de/html/mini_comparison.html ; could anyone tell me how to use the [url/]-tag please?)  shows that BTD is also on the "heroic" side of 28mm...

Cheers
Me

Not sure on the size of these but you could possibly head swap out the colony troops with West wind soviet heads???? you would need to see if they matched first though?

Thanks, added them.

I don`t know, but in which scale was the AK 47 introduced to the Red Army until around 1950? If 100% ot the Russian infantry got access to it it won`t be easy to use WW2 figs... but hey, it`s the Wierd Cold War  :D

Any other ideas/clichè/stereotypes the Russian should have had in the Cold War? Tesla Tanks? Cloned mind-controlling baldheads? Evil Soviet Villains James Bond style?  8)

Pretty early on if you believe Wiki

The AK-47 (contraction of Russian: Автомат Калашникова образца 1947 года; Avtomat Kalashnikova obraztsa 1947 goda; "Kalashnikov's automatic rifle model of year 1947") is a 7.62 mm assault rifle developed in the Soviet Union by Mikhail Kalashnikov in two versions: the fixed stock AK-47 and the AKS-47 (S—So skladnym prikladom) variant equipped with an underfolding metal shoulder stock. Design work on the AK began in 1944. In 1946 the rifle was presented for official military trials, a year later the fixed stock version was introduced into service with select units of the Red Army (the folding stock model was developed later). The AK-47 was officially accepted by the Soviet Armed Forces in 1949. It is also used by the majority of the member states of the former Warsaw Pact. The AK-47 was also used as a basis for the development of many other types of individual and crew-served firearms. It was one of the first true assault rifles and, due to its durability and ease of use, remains the most widely used assault rifle in the world. More AK-type rifles have been produced than any other assault rifle.

One more producer to add to the list - Eureka has Soviets with AK-47 and full NBC warfare gear.  You can be sure that any Wierd Cold War will require NBC gear!
