Re: Part 2 Early war German batch painting

Hi guys

Last print of 2022 on the black tray with my old LD002R, and the first print of 2023 on the paper towel with my new Halot one plus, the LD002R was on its last legs, probably could be serviced, all these WWII French vehicles failed in some way, bad print lines, tearing and lifting of the print bed, wasn’t sure if it was the machine, the thumb drive or user error but I was having a hell of a time with it, so was looking forward to a test print on the new printer, didn’t do anything different, had 3 successful prints and 1 fail, the failed print peeled of the print bed, looks like a tank ran it over, being brand new the print bed was very smooth, have scratched it up a bit, so hopefully it’ll get good adherence from now on, as it turns out, I’d messed up the scaling for these Laffly S20 vehicles on the LD002R print, they are slightly to small, maybe 1/76 instead of 1/72, so not to worried they didn’t work, I’ll make them into battlefield debris, some small issues with the new prints, but all due to support placement, but they are usable.

Hi guys
Have done a black oil pin wash, a dry brush, chipping, oil streaking, and a brown oil pin wash, next I’ll paint some details, then some weathering with pastels.

 Hi guys

Anyone who knows me, knows I tend to often move between genres and scales, however, it is hard to get things completed with so many projects on the go, so through 2023 I have decided to stick to 1/72 WWII, and will try and complete 4 projects, my 1940 French, Hungarians, Luftwaffe field Division, and the 21st Pz Div, with maybe a couple of smaller projects, Soviet naval infantry and assault engineers.

With that in mind I am gathering together the various models and figures I have for these projects, the first 2 being the French and Hungarians.

The French have been a bit of a slow burner, I am getting quite a large collect, mostly 3D prints, which I’ll be adding detail to, I have a mix of Simons soldiers metals, and various plastics for the figures.

For the Hungarians I’ll be using Simons soldiers Germans, I like them a lot as Hungarians, I have a mix of IBG kits and 3D prints for the vehicles, I have hollowed out all the vehicle, and I have punched holes in some of the turret hatches so I can mount vehicle commanders in the turrets.

Good luck with those!

I will be extra curious for your Hungarian project. Early war Germans are a good base, I did a lot of conversions in 1/35, the highlights were
-Hungarian uniform had those special pocket flaps
-Hungarian belt buckle was a simple frame solution- I guess you can let it go in smaller scales.
-Hungarian army wore short, laced boots. (I think long trousered Afrika Korps are maybe the best base material) But some soldiers got sapper boots for themselves, so it is not a big deal to leave them in German boots.
-the knapsack was similar, but the canteen, gas mask package and mess tin was different
-smaller details  like the rank badges on the collar or the fastening hook on the back of the helmet only matter in bigger scales

I think most detail at 20mm will be difficult to see, I may shorten the gasmask container, may try and do something with the pockets, lengthening the trousers isn’t an issue. We’ll see how I go, of all the projects I’m doing this year, it’s actually the most interesting for me.

The gas mask container you could simply just remove or make into a bedroll. It was rarely carried, especially in 44-45.

Aiming for lead up to and over the Stalingrad period, but maybe I’ll look at 44-45 as well.

Well, it’s been somewhat of a slow burner, so hopefully I can get it completed this year, hope it gives you some inspiration.

Hi guys

Gathering together the vehicles for another 2023 project, the 21st Pz Div, a project that’s been simmering in the back of my mind for many years, just an excuse to paint and collect those French funnies, also starting the conversions on my Luftwaffe field division infantry, I'm using a mixture of Heer and Fallschirmjagers figures with head swaps to the M40 helmet, next I’ll give them Luftwaffe camouflaged field jackets.

Wow! A lot of cool projects for this year.

Looking forward to seeing the French (in particular) - I think you have more vehicles for them than I do in 10mm!
