Question about new GW spray gun
« on: 08 October 2008, 08:38:20 PM »
Hi all,

I was looking at getting an airbrush to use to repaint some plastic kids vehicles but have seen that Games Workshop are bringing a spray gun out in a couple of weeks. I'm not looking to create a work of art and am just looking to be able to get that slightly mottled look airbrushs can give. Reckon thats achievable with the GW product?

Thks

I would suggest against it. For the same money, or less if you shop right, you can get a much better set up.
Check your local Michael's, AC Moore and the like. They always have coupons off for better deals.
No compressed air, look to get a air tank or better yet a compressor.
With the compressor, a moisture trap and a regulator is suggested/recommend and a must.
The airbrush, look to get a double action. I suggest a gravity feed or syphon feed type of brush.
Iwata, Paasche, Aztek and Badger are good places for AB makeers to start with.
www.bearair.com is a great site for supplies.
http://www.howtoairbrush.com/ is a great place for techniques, FAQ's and forums and so on.

That is about all i have to say off the top of my head. :-)

I'd say it depends. I hear the previous GW thingy was a real stinker. I would be guessing the new one won't have a good price/quality ratio either? Haven't seen the new one actually.

You can get pretty decent airbrushes that are replicas of quality air brushes. They're usually made in China or Hongkong, and they're sold in DIY shops (at least here they are). I got one dual action brush, and it's pretty good actually. For a beginner (I assume you're one), this is good and cheap way to start learning AB, and then later you can get a better one, and use the old one for priming etc.

A compressor would be advisable. You can get them cheap at DIY stores, but they're rather loud. Quiet hobby ones can be expensive, but there are cheaper models as well. The cheap ones usually don't come with an air tank, or the tank is very small. It's really up to you, but I promise you will soon get tired of the air propellent cans, and want a compressor. If you can afford it, buy a compressor. Personally, I'd sooner buy a decent compressor and cheap AB than the other way around.

Thanks for the detailed responses guys - as I feared I think I'll go down the proper airbrush route.
