Mystery Inc. Pulp Alley League
« on: 28 April 2015, 06:01:34 PM »
This is a league that I put together for a game at the club last night.

The idea is for a non combat, mystery solving league. The idea of the Scooby Gang drawing a shooter and blazing away just does not work.

So.. does anyone have any ideas for improvements?

Only that the in the perk descriptions, the colon after the perk name comes after an empty space, and then the description starts immediately, whereas it should be the other way around :)

For all but one character above rename "Animal" to something else:

Passive
Deductive
Gentle
Unarmed

You cannot use "Noncombatant" though,

In the strictest Biercian construction that is:

NON-COMBATANT, n. A dead Quaker.

Besides I've never met a redhead who wasn't well endowed with combative proclivities...

YMMV, but I doubt it

If you have already decided that shooting is not the league's character, you can lower Shaggy to Follower, and get ANIMALS as a perk for all (or as many as you decide).

That can give you some OTHER abilities to further characterise your Scooby league (make scooby a fast runner for instance).

Hope that helps.

Mmm... I... really... need... to... resist... the... urge... to... buy... those... minis...
I know you're too old to play with toy soldiers. So give them to me... NOW!

To follow-up on Gustavo's ideas ---

Maybe give Fred the 'Commander' ability to get some extra slots (14 total).

Then get Animals perk (2), Companions perk (1), Daredevil Adventurers (3)

Take Daphne, Velma, Shaggy, and Scooby all as Allies (8 slots).

So, each Ally could have 'Daredevil', 'Animal', plus 2 more abilities.

I like the idea of giving Velma 'Brainy', and maybe giving Daphne 'Sly', but that will wipe out their Brawl and Shoot.

The league would do quite well at perils and plot points, but be weak in fights. Maybe something like this ---

Velma (Ally) -- Animal, Brainy, Clever, Daredevil
Brawl = no dice
Shoot = no dice
Dodge = 3d6
Might = 1d6
Finesse = 3d6
Cunning = 4d6

Anywho -- it is a great idea for a Pulp Alley league!  lol lol

But remember - their 'shoot' or brawl could very well be the outrageous traps that Velma would set up, or Shaggy throwing things, like paint cans or buckets.

Shoot does not *have* to be guns.

Great idea for a league. Makes me want to paint my set now and I bought a 'Mystery Machine' to go with them. Have you played a game yet? You need a Scooby theme, some evil developers are pretending an old theme park/warehouse/mine is haunted so they can close it down and build a housing estate on it!  ;) "....and if it wasn't for you pesky meddling kids.................."

Hi Martin,

Yes we played a gaming using them on Monday, at Ripon Wargames Club. They did very well, we played trail of clues, they got the major plot point but did not manage to keep hold of it as a big burly policeman in riot gear brawled shaggy to the ground and claimed it hor himself in the last turn.

I was playing the 'Hot Fuzz' league so it won me the game... Scooby had the Ahhh factor, 'your not going to shoot Scooby-Doo, are you?'

What have you got for the Mystery Machine? I will be using Mystery Inc. for demo games at UK Games Expo, and think we need one for then!

Cheers,

Chris

Thank you so very much to everyone who has contributed some ideas.

I have updated the character cards for the whole gang on my Pulp Alley Hobby pages at : http://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/Hobby-Pages/Pulp-Alley-28mm-Pulp-Adventure-Gaming/Mystery-Incorporated-League

I decided to use Commander, Companions, Animal & Daredevil Adventurers. The result is a league that is very good at solving plot points, will need to dodge out of combat situations, and will hopefully be able to play some perils on the opposition to cause some damage to represent them setting traps etc.

Please feel free to use the cards in your own games!

You might try Armorcast's "Clue Contraption"
http://www.armorcast.com/modern-terrain/modern-vehicles/clue-contraption-hippie-van.
I think someone (Company B?) did Mystery Machine decals for this and for Crooked Dice's Transit Van.

Or there's this, for Hot Wheels, listed as 1/50:

Back from the dead, almost.

Nice. Lots of ways to interpret this league.
Possibly I'd add the Swarm ability (renamed to Lured) to Shaggy and Scooby to show they have to gone forward and lured the villians to the trap.

Or create a league perk: The Trap: Designate, once per game, a 3" area next to a character as an extreme peril to non-league members only; remains in play for rest of game.

And need a Scooby Snacks gear option

Chris,
I have the Hot Wheels one which Steve F has a link to above. I think it looks rather good but getting Scooby and Shaggy out of the van looks quite tricky. I'm just going to give mine a repaint and keep them in it.

I have seen the decals for the other vans advertised but I can't remember who did them. There's a thread on the LAF somewhere.
