New question 13/05/15: Starting Peninsular War Project

I've heard some good things about Lasalle but, from what I've heard, I'm not sure about how it would handle lots of units.

Lasalle is a pretty book, but something about it turned me off.

I think the scale? Is Lasalle the one where battalions stand for brigades? I could be mis-remembering.

I thought Lasalle was for 'Divisional' games with 1 btn to a btn. I think Mustapha was going to do another set, Blucher [?], for bigger games. I might be wrong.

I don't know if you have a history of war gaming in this period (I don't, not really, though I've played a few games over the last 35+ years and, bizarrely, started there) but I think most of the rules were made for either small battles (12 or so units a side) or, to a lesser degree, huge battles (40+ units a side). Trying to find something somewhere in the middle for recreating big battles at reduced scale (20 - 30 units a side) doesn't seem to be catered for much (again, I might be wrong). Hopefully, someone will come up with a good suggestion for us - I don't plan on buying every rule set in the hope I stumble across the right one, given the numbers out there I couldn't afford to do anything else if I did that.

I'm kind of a beginner to Naps as well. I think Black Powder is the right size, I need to do more research and testing, and I agree that good suggestions will be welcome.

I also have - actually, I *love* to read it - Scott Bowden's "Chef de Batallion", but that's really a game for one Regiment/ Squadron per player, and would be really hard to do with 28mm. Fun to read, though.

Lasalle is probably perfect for what you want to do and fits your basing plan very well indeed.

Figures stay on my table for weeks, and sometimes, especially in the summer, the table gets a lot of afternoon sun through this window (and I constantly forget to pull the blinds).

There's not that much sunlight -we're in Yorkshire!

Make it sound too attractive and we'll get hordes of southerners coming to look for cheap houses. :~}

More power to you James. I love what you do and you will do this justice and then some. Naps were my first love, a complete obsession, but the rules for this period are a mess, and that's what's allowed my armies to gather dust for many years. Interestingly the last time I enjoyed playing the period was about 20 years ago. Computer based rules ('Follow the eagle'?) and 2mm armies. Those were brilliant battles.

Us poor Queenslanders have always had damned southerners coming up here for the sun pushing up the property prices, making the place all arty farty and decadent.
Damn'it, it's even been rumoured that you have been able to get a decent cup of coffee in Brisbane over the last few years.
