Best Flags, 28mm, Napoleonic?
« on: May 14, 2015, 10:51:48 AM »
Hi guys,

thinking ahead, I'm in two minds about painting my own flags for my upcoming Peninsular project. I'm quite good at paining flags but, I'm not sure I'll have the time.

If I decide to buy ready printed flags, which manufacturers should I look at. GMB look pretty good, and £3.50 for two is a fair price. Does anyone produce high quality flags on thin cloth?

Regards,

James

John Hutchison does cloth flags which look awesome. I think the only way of contacting him is via 'Like a Stonewall Wargames Group'. Someone else might have other details though.

I have tried cloth for my flags but i wasn't happy with the results. Some of the flags i spend alot of time putting the detail on and this can get lost when printing on the cloth. Then again sometimes detail at 28mm doesn't always matter  lol lol

Maverick Models also have an option to print theirs on cloth:

Stuart is also excellent to deal with.

The problem I've found with cloth flags that in 28mm they look as they've been woven out of straw. The weave is just waaaay too wide to represent silk flags. GMB for me everytime.

So agree with you on that. Can't stand those flags that look like loose-weave hessian. The texture is ridiculously wrong.
I will say though, I'm a recent convert to Pete's Flags, which he supplies printed on either paper or on a very fine weave fabric, which gives a very nice effect.
Alas, he does mainly late medieval / renaissance, but does a few Napoleonic designs:

I know what you mean about some cloth flags, but I saw some (perhaps on the FR stand at a show) that had been printed on what must have been something like a man made silk. They looked amazing.

They are the John Hutchison ones. They are very nice imo.

GMB are very good if you are happy with paper; they are quite thin so look good when they have folds put in them.

"Flag Dude" has both paper and cloth flags at a reasonable $6 per flag for the paper version. They come complete with painted finials and cords. Most of my flags for the War of 1812 are Flag Dude with GMB too.

He has and extensive range of Napoleonic flags for your project. Also, if you do not see the flag on his outdated listing, just ask Rick. He probably has it but has not listed it.

Thanks guys, it looks like GMB will be the way to go. 50 units, I wonder if GMB do discount?
