Reaper Bones big orcs
« on: 16 May 2015, 01:43:36 PM »
Managed to slap some paints on these, my first Bones figs really. Cleaning these up is a pother, no news at this point I expect? They take paint pretty well, but I wasn't able to fully straighted the wobbly blades (with hot & cold water) , especially on the two-hand sword wielder. Would need to resort to a hot air gun or something.

Shown with a couple of LOTR figs for comparison, the black troll is Reaper Metal one by Bob Olley.

EDIT: Oh yeah, I severely cut down the size of the axe blade on the boss orc, it was nearly twice as big, no joke!

Lovely work.  I quite like those big Orcs...might have to pick up a couple (looks like a good brute style fig).

The detail on the fur looks quite soft. Is that true?
Nice pj's btw.

Thanks - yes the detailing is rather shallow and soft at places, like on the fur and to some extent the chain mail. I think if you compare the same mini in metal and in the Bones plastic, the difference should be very apparent. Some minis are better than others though.

But I did paint these quite fast and didn't bother with too many highlights, so that might be another factor. If you want to paint showcase minis, go with metal. Bones are for best used for rank & file and quick tabletop standard, really.

Hot air gun aka hairdryer. Try it, worked for me.

Another option I'd suggest is that Reaper produce several weapon packs of rather absurdly large weapons.  I've used them on some pre-paint miniatures to good effect.  They're about the right scale for your orcs if you do more in the future.

I know it technically adds cost, but an option is weapons are too bendy.  A bit of superglue (assuming it works on Bones material) and you're good.

Thanks. I knew already bones worked better on large size models, but if the difference is that big, I'll spend the extra $ for the metal versions, since I don't collect armies, only miniatures  ;).
