Re: Painting Steel Fist Samurai **Updated 08/07/2015** - Brass etch flag
« Reply #39 on: 10 July 2015, 12:54:42 PM »
I was lucky enough to get hold of one of Steel Fist Miniatures brass etch flags, now I have not tried to use one of these before, so I was a little intimidated. I had limited experience with adding brass grills to armour once before and had brought some tools for using brass etch in the future but this was all new to me.

I wish I had taken photos along the way of what I did, sorry about that. As you can see from the image below the Brass etch flag come in a fret (I think that's what it's called) and you need a sharp blade to cut the brass, use a flat surface as bending brass can lead to problems later, I used a spare bathroom tile. Clean the edges with a file, being careful not to bend the brass.

Next I placed the brass wire I had hanging around from when I pin miniatures and cut to a length I was happy with. Then I placed the wire over the brass flaps I guess you could call them and carefully folded each one over using tweezers. After each one is done I did the same with a separate piece for the cross bar. I then added a little shape to the brass to show some movement in the wind and made sure the pole and flag was centralised.

Next I grabbed an old wire and stripped it down to use as ropes broke out my osprey book and did some searching on the web as to how they looked and wound the wire and cut and glued in place. Added the top support and left two lengths for the carrier to hold. The last thing to do is hit it with some good glue I use Zap-A Gap Medium CA+ great stuff and bonds very very quick. I did add a little glue to hold things in place during the build by the way.

If you have any questions let me know and I will try and help. Here is some pictures.

Some of you may have noticed in the top picture some Samurai cavalry and read that I will be adding a review of them shortly.

Cheers

Neil
