Afroamerican people??
« on: 14 October 2008, 01:58:43 PM »
Hi,

I am thinking about doing an adventure wich involves afroamerican people. The idea is that an African shaman travels to NY and recruits people to help him in recover an ancient mask from a museum. The recruits have to be normal afroamerican city people (workers, etc.) and it is not important if they are armed or not.

Do you have any idea of miniatures that could be used for them??
Thanks!

There are a few likely looking chancers here:

Civillians, and unarmed, but somehow look a bit shady and up to no good. Should be perfect. (I just finished painting the fat guy, lovely sculpt.)

You might find some of the Obelisk "GangStars" miniatures useful too.

These are all modern looking minis though, if you are planning something a bit more retro I wouldn't know where to start, sorry.

There are some figures in both the Copplestone and em4 Future Wars lines have civillian clothes, and would work, if painted appropriately.   See Citizen Militia, Suits, Men in Black, etc.

I think some of the VASA militia from the Void 1.1 line appear to have African ethnic features.  They are a little "futuristic/cyberpunk," though.

Also look at Hasselfree- "Kendra" would certainly work, there may be others in the line.

Yes, the idea is to play in the interwar era, sorry.

These miniatures could be useful with a bit of conversion. I didn't think in that possibility, and perhaps is the best one as I don't know if there are any other alternatives.

Thank you!

I was thinking about the modern period, so some of my suggestions don't apply...

But I think Copplestone would still be a good place to look.  While the figures in the "Gangsters" range are not necessarily sculpted as African-Americans, a lot of them have hats, etc. so they would look fine if you just painted them with brown skin tones.  Also there is a variety of poses, both armed and unarmed.

Out of curiosity, are you of afro-american decent yourself, Tsune? The reason I ask is that at Historicon in PA, USA, I noticed that wargaming seemed to be a staking singularly white male affair. I've been pondering that fact now and again.

For an interwar setting, Pulp Figures has some good, basic working class folks, especially in the tramp steamer crews and gangland justice sets:
http://pulpfigures.com/catcode.php?range=Savage%20Seas&code=PSS&number=2&custID=6618227921224027532
http://pulpfigures.com/catcode.php?range=Gangland%20Justice&code=PGJ&number=3&custID=6618227921224027532

You get a mix of armed and unarmed with the tramp steamer crews, and some of them even have a selection of arms with tools or weapons.

Brigade Games has a pack of Haitian civilians that would be useful to help set the scene, including a black man in ordinary clothes, a couple of women, and a couple of children.  I think the pack is in the Brigade games Carribean Wars range, or something like that, which is mostly oriented to early 20th Century intervention by the US in that region.

Here's a PULP FIGURES sailor - the sculpting struck me as having more African features - so I painted him that way.   I think many of their figures could be similarly painted:

A costly solution would be headswaps. any pulp range with heads from Foundry's Darkest Africa. I did that with Em4 figs for modern figs and it looks great.

Otherwise, caucasian features painted brown is easily explained as ethiopian or somalian descent or parents of mixed race.

This what I had in mind. Concidering the cost the second solution is better!
