Frostgrave collides with Westeros. Gamer excited.
« on: May 28, 2015, 10:18:40 PM »
And so.....a few years ago I had the idea of setting a fantasy skirmish campaign in a ruined city or rather the swampy, bog ridden ruins of a city. I called it the Aardvark Wallow after a place in a SPI game I enjoyed. The few posts are at

keepwallowing.blogspot.co.uk

The idea never really took off but a few nights ago I saw ep5 of GOT and my head spun astoundedly. When Mormont and Tyrion go boating through Doomed Valyria - that was the Wallow! How I had pictured it! On my TV! In full HBO CGI beauty! With a Dragon flying over head! Now it was Skyrim!

After my brain settled down, I thought, yeah, fantasy city, ruined. Monsters. People looking for artefacts of Valyria. Campaign? Yes, great fun. Rules? Mmm? Just like Frostgrave but in a swamp.

I had to lie down for a bit then till things stopped spinning.

So, that's my idea....use Frostgrave for adventures loosely based on treasure hunting in a city inspired by Doomed Valyria. The thing is that the D20 combat system has just eneough D&D in its DNA for that retro vibe and while my fantasy is very much populated by pig faced Orcs etc, I'm not going completely Westeros, it's not impossible that the destruction of Valyria created some kind of vortex dragging in all kinds of diverse beasts.....

This is a work in progress and is, I'll admit, insanely tangential but I'm a bit excited.

Sounds good to me, swamp/canal city terrain always looks good.
So many projects..... so little time.......

I've not seen that episode yet, but I like the sound of it!

I always wanted to do a Renaissance skirmish in Venice - something like Carnavale, but the thought of producing all that bespoke, limited-use terrain put me off... I will look forward to pics!

Sounds like a brand extension waiting to happen to me, Phil...  ;)

Use the same base-board that one would use for naval games - that sullen, leaden North Sea looking green - and add sawed-off ruined buildings, mats of floating vegetation, mangrove trees and waterlined monster minis. And a large collection of boats and rafts to use as fighting platforms...

I can see it now. It's glorious.

Not quite, but more on that in due course - I don't want to hijack Harry's thread (more than I already have).

Phil, you popinjay!

This? This I like.

Reminds me of the hours we used to spend, converting Foundry ECW models with pins for swords so we could play 'Flashing Blades'.

You too huh? I painted some Minifig ECW officers as musketeers from the dick lester films. Not my finest hour given I was about 11. Best part was Rochefort's eyepatch as it was simply a nice blob of black over an eye. Couldn't miss really.
