how to make ashigaru hats?
« on: 06 June 2015, 11:00:00 AM »
Hi there,

are they any ways to make this typical conical hats of ashigaru? I mean, beside greenstuff or folded paper-discs.
I will be happy with just the conical hat, without this neck-thing.

Hints, tricks and suggestions welcome.
I have some shields which are suitable ... yet very limited. I'd prefere to use them as ... shields.

thanks in advance
DK

I know you said "besides green stuff", but assuming you want to make more than one hat, have you ruled out making a press mould from modelling putty (ProCreate is slightly superior to Green Stuff, BTW) and then press casting the hats out of more putty? Admittedly it can be a slight hassle as you have to coat the mould in cooking oil or vaseline between press-castings and then wash it off the finished pieces, and you might have to leave the putty being cast to dry in the mould for a while to ensure it won't be deformed upon removal. It's what I would do, though.

You might have to fashion your own cone shape to mould. I'm trying to err on the side of caution and not test the admins' and moderators' patience vis-á-vis discussion of recasting, even of a basic cone shape.

I keep moulding in mind, thought about that - and greenstuff as well as other stuffs - in mind. But I was hoping for some genius - not me - with suggestions like use "the tip of a so&so pencil" or "a backside of a refridgerator lid"  o_o ... dunno ... some weird idea of things which are usually junk or ... well, You know??

I copy bits, and bits that I make myself that I need all the time with that japanese clay called Oyyumaru. A cone shape like that is dead easy if you have one original or make one out of laminated plasticcard. Then just copy with Milliput or Greenstuff (or a mix of both) and you can make all the hats you need.

There was a Kings of War blog once that made Asian undead with those hats. I will try to dig it out for you.

I suspect this is what he meant (after a momentary Google search):

linky

now, that's the idea ... ideal for shoes, belts, bags and maybe ashigaru. Will try that direction.
And this might lead to some more ideas.

Thanx a lot
