I know that's not what you asked but it annoys the shit out of me  ;D

Ok, lets try a different tack: What is the 'real' dimensions of the more common classes of fighter?
Tie, X, Y, A and B-wings for instance.
I know you have the info in books but maybe there is an online source listing them....

Length, height and wingspan.

X-Wing
Length - 46mm
Height - 15mm
Wingspan - 38mm

TIE Fighter
Length - 38mm
Height - 40mm
Wingspan - 32mm

(I measured them myself - so I might be out +/-1mm.)

Thanks, chaps.
Much appreciated.

I ask as i have some metal SW ships in my possession and have no idea where they came from.
If anyone knows who produced small SW starfighters in metal, please let me know as I have never seen them before.

I wondered if they were similar enough in scale to be used in X-wing and , if not, whether they are in scale with each other.

Thanks to von Lucky* I now know that they are too small for X-wing, being about half the size, but they may well be in scale with each other.
If so....I have a plan!
 ;)

*Thank you very much for taking the time out to measure, mate.
Much appreciated.

I think you may have some Studio Bergstrom miniatures. They had a line of metal ships that included x-wing-like fighters, along with a y-wing and tie fighters. They also made lovely vipers and raiders from another sci-fi property.

Yeah, that sounds about right. US based, so never ordered from them, though was sorely tempted many times.

Really?

I thought they kept to their 1/270 pretty closely. Bar the Huge ships obviously, but there are alternatives out there to cover those (Hasbro Blockade Runner and Revell Hoth GR-75 for instance).

I did find that the TIE-Fighters are somewhat too big, but that does depend on which source you want to believe.

If I remember correctly, Wookiepedia had the length at 8m, but FFG was allowed access to the actual studio models and they measured from there, which led to some controversy about what is canon and what is not. As for the rest, they're pretty dang close:

X-Wing: 12.5m, @ 1/270: 4.622963cm, FFG: 4,60cm
Y-Wing: 16m, @ 1/270: 5.925925cm, FFG: 5,85cm
A-Wing: 9.6m, @ 1/270: 3,555555cm, FFG: 3,60cm
Tie-Fighter: 8m, @ 1/270: 2.962962, FFG: 3,80cm
Tie Advanced: 9.2m, @ 1/270: 3.407407, FFG: 3,35cm
Tie Interceptor: 9.6m, @ 1/270: 3,555555cm, FFG: 3,60cm

I'm not too bothered by the above differences, even though the A-Wing model somehow always seemed too big to me. ::)

I don't have the measurements of all of the other models at hand though, so I can't vouch for those. But the first and second waves seem to be pretty spot on...
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

Really  :)

Given that these ship are 'made' on a computer first there's no excuse for them to be out at all.

Wargaming figures in general don't have a 'scale' per se due to the over emphasised proportions but (and this is something purely personal) these, along with naval wargaming models are scalable.

Larger ships I understand due to the impracticalities but snub fighters are all in the same bracket size.

Interesting about them using studio scale models, I'll have to do some research into the studio sizes  :)

cheers

Oh, but I fully agree!

It was one of the draws for me, to know that they took the precise scaling of the models so seriously. I was quite disappointed to learn that they would be scaling the corvette and transport at 1/350 instead, but like I said; there are alternatives out there for that.

I'm not bothered by one or even (gasp :D ) two millimeters of deviation, especially on the large models, though I do feel they should maintain their original goal of a consistent scale as much as possible.

But that A-Wing still feels too large to me... ;)

 lol

It grates, I admit, but it's the only way to maintain what little sanity I have left. :D

See; I've been dabbling at a Battletech 1/100 scale project, trying to get all my mechs in the exact scale. Trust me; trying to get obscure japanese 1/140 scale kits enlarged to an exacting 1/100 scale is enough to drive even the most balanced person to the brink of insanity...  ;D
