The return of the cheap train (at least in the UK)

In the run up to Christmas, Wilkinsons is carrying that cheap battery powered Western train set again.

In the U.S., start checking CVS and other drugstores when they start stocking toys for Christmas. The sets are smaller now (less track), but cost only $10.

Toys 'R' Us usually has the trains, too, under their Fast Lane brand.

In years past, I have not seen these sets at Walmart, Target or Kmart.

There's a Western set, a "Continental Express" set (good for 1900 on) and a third set, a bit more modern.

I should add that the trains I get are U.S. "O" Scale (1/48). A bit on the large side for 28mm, but they look fine. Regular O Scale track works fine then -- you'll need more since the box doesn't give you enough straight track to go across a game table.

Or buy multiple sets -- they're cheap!

Here is a comparison between the 2 types of train:

The larger one is the Wilkinsons one, bought last year.  The smaller one is the Fastlane one I bought in the US 2 years ago. 





IMO the Wilkinsons one is too big for 28mm miniatures.  It might do for a large train/conversion. VSF anyone....

I'm starting to feel a bit confused as to ecxactly what train i have now, it says toy state underneath it, fastlane/goldlok ones are marked as such aren't they?

I have the Fastlane western train. I think they do other sets as well?

I have the smaller one, labeled as goldlok.
They had the Western express as well, but I didn't buy it because it was 5€ more. Been kicking myself about it ever since.
