Batman, price wise is it worth it.
« on: June 22, 2015, 05:54:19 PM »
I'm on a split shift today and popped into Wargames Emporium on my break and had a flick through the rule book. Now at my core I'm a massive batman fan and have a massive collection of models and toys. So, so many batmobiles on the shelves. The thing that puts me off is with all these licensed games is that fact they have to pay royalty rights so when they put the game into production you have to pay. I've been told Aliens vs Predator may be between £70-£90. That's just for a hand full of minis, a set of rule and a gaming board. Though they a very nice minis indeed. Better than that Wiz Kids crap. Then they just fade into the twilight never to be heard from again only to show up on ebay for stupid amounts of money. Yes I bought Doom for stupid amounts.

So the rules are £35 and then I've got to dig out the wallet again for the minis. So financially is it worth the investment or will I be going down the GW route and just get f**ked off over how little I've got for my money. What's  you opinion?

P.S. I do like the amusement park board.
I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass....and I'm all out of bubblegum. No wait I've just found another pack in my back pocket. Mmm tropical fruit bubblicious.

I'm pretty sure there is a free version of the rules if you don't mind having a pdf ve4sion instead of book.

So, I firmly believe in gaming on a budget.  If I don't feel like I'm getting my money's worth, I can't enjoy the game.  You will be paying more per figure in Batman than most other games, there's no question about that.  The experience?  I love the game.  The sculpts are amazing, the game is fantastically fun, and my brain goes into overdrive when I play.  That being said, if you don't enjoy the style of play, don't bother.

Download the rules, play it out a bit, see what you think before investing.

And I make terrain for the game with my company, www.angrymojogames.com [shamelssplug]I can't help myself[/shamelessplug]

I would agree, download it and try it, use some cheap clix, if you like it invest in the higher quality models and the book.

Element Games are consistently the cheapest Batman retailer in the UK: http://elementgames.co.uk/wargames-and-miniatures/cult-steampunk-other-miniatures-games/batman-miniatures-game

Price wise, the figures are on the high end of the wargaming scale, but certainly not the most expensive. A single character figure from Games Workshop these days costs the same or more, and you'll need fifty of his little friends before you can play. In the Batman game you can get a 'standard' sized Crew (350 Reputation Points) using just 5-6 models. The starter boxes of miniatures (the Joker gang and the new Court of Owls especially) retail for under £30 GBP, and contain an entire faction. Obviously the expense starts to rack up if you want the city scenery, but even then there are lots of budget MDF suppliers - just check ebay.

For full disclosure: I did work on the game rulebook, so I am affiliated with Knight Models. But hopefully the advice above is valid regardless :)

You need to look in the clearance section at the main page, but there are only a handful of batman miniatures, I ordered the ones I didn't have. This game has the most expensive miniatures I know of, but it also has one of the most dynamic and cinematic gameplay. I wish all my friends were into batman like I do, but I have 1 gaming buddy to play against and that's OK.

For the price of the rules i wanted a little more in it than just standard rules. The rules look great and they basics are very easy to pick up. Id have liked more scenarios and Campaign rules rather than page on page of painted minis that are already displayed on their site. My only gripes with the rules.

The figures are great and agreed they are very expensive but the sculptors who have done these are really top end and nailed the characters. Some of the casting could be alot better and also some of the figures are a right pain to put together. Again for the money i expected more given some Historical figure companies have top quality casting from Griffin. Despite this i have spent near £200 on the game lol

To get figures cheaper id suggest using The Outpost, Very quick service. I know Wayland have meant to have improved but my previous poor service has put me off using them again sadly.

I would go with the suggestion of using cheap clix, with the downloaded rules to see if you like it. I agree that the value on the rule book isn't there with most of it being pics of their figures from their website.
Looking for a set of rules that adaptable for different genres.

Does anyone know if the printed rulebook is the same as the PDF?  I saw a bunch of pictures of the amusement park in the previews when it was up for pre-order, but none in the PDF.

The printed rulebook is pretty different from the PDF. I did the native English translation - the PDF has a few missing bits, is in a slightly 'Spanglish' translation, has no background section, etc. Many of the existing rules have been tweaked, while a few new special rules have been added.

In short - you can easily pick up the basics with the PDF, but the new rulebook is cleaner and more complete.

There's a change log between the two rulebook versions here. Hope it helps  :) http://critskillpeople.blogspot.ca/2015/03/changes-in-bmg.html?m=1
