Athenian re-inforcements

In May I bought an Athenian army off of Steve Jones (a far better painter than me) and have been busy rebasing them.



With the hoplites I already had, I can now field a force that will may my Spartans at least pause for thought (even if that thought is just "Kill them all!").

The light infantry bases are innovative- they are 18cm wide "scenic" bases, a bit like the ones used for Impetus but broader. In my "To the Strongest!" rules light units only have a single hit, so there is no faffing with elements or casualty removal.

Later this week I'll post close ups, Steve did some lovely work on these minis.

Looking forward to the close ups. And I really like those big bases. They would completely outsize all my storage solutions, and I would hate to pack them up for a move – but their visual impact is fabulous.
Only and very minor 'gripe': Probably I'd based the minis in small, separate groups rather than in lines spreading across the full base width. This would look even more irregular. But that's personal taste.

Thanks Mad Doc- they are designed to store in Really Useful Boxes and will travel a great deal in them to shows.  The bases are magnetic. 

Oddly I have recently invested in a lot of Kaiser Rushforth single-figure storage, which I use to store minis I have bought before they get based.  Great products!

The reason for the lines is an odd one; all the skirmishers were originally nicely based on 1" square bases and I didn't want to strip it all away, as the basing material was pretty good.  I usually do more irregular arrangements but I quite like the lines; it looks like they have just come out from the trenches and are about to be machine gunned!  ;-)

Gave some to my Roman centurions, although as a reference to the first scene of "Rome" rather.

Very nice, especially the lights. Do you have a ratio of skirmishers to hoplites in the rules?


I've based my figs for this period on large single bases too, though not as big as these. I think its an excellent idea, after all we spend so much time painting figs that we do them a disservice by squeezing them onto a little base with a green clump and a rock or two. I use Minibitz 6mm dice and frames to record casualties, tucked behind a figures leg, they're almost invisible on the table top.
