1864 - Need help with Hussars!
« on: 18 July 2015, 07:41:16 PM »
Having seen the 1864 mini-series I would like to re-create the skirmish between Austrian (or is it Prussian?) Hussars and Danish soldiers. The Danish is fairly easy to convert but the Hussars are a problem. I would be grateful for any ideas where to get hold of suitable "Death-head" busby heads/headgear as well as suitable dismounted troopers that can be converted:

Definitely Prussian. Can't help with the figures much though. Franco-Prussian war was only 6 years later and the Hussar uniform was the same, you'll struggle for dismounted but there are a few available. Foundry do a pack (I think with death head) although personally I don't rate them.
So many projects..... so little time.......

Have a look and see if Great War minis do a German hussar pack. If memory serves the 1914 uniform may not have been that different from that shown here, only a different colour.

Buy some female heads with Deaths head hats from Hinterland Miniatures and cut them off

Thanks for your valued advice!

I have seen the foundry ones but they are a bit on the smallish side and only one pose available. GWM does unfortunately not have any dismounted hussars. The Hinterland head option is interesting. Then only the body remains :)
Then I need to find bodies with braided jackets. There are quite a few SYW dismounted hussars available, would they do with a bit of tweaking or are there other 19th Century figures with braided jackets, maybe these Empress miniatures would be better?

Danes are available from Eureka.

Sadly I think those 'Deaths Head Hussars' are a-historical, but certainly sinister! The actual battle preceding that incident was Oversee, between Austrians and Danes so pursuing cavalry would've been Austrian which I believe are available (in mounted form) from Northstar.

Any dismounted Hussars seem to be difficult to find.

Good luck with this project. Keep us posted on your progress.

cheers

Julesav,

Thanks for your comments. As I understand the death-head busby was worn by the Leib Husar Regiment no 1. So far so good, But as you write the, "1864" movie people put them in the wrong place at the wrong time. My objective is though to re-create the movie, even though it is not historically correct  ;)

I still struggle with the bodies though, where to find those dismounted braided jackets...

If you have some converting talent would it be possible to convert using Perry plastic parts?

I believe you can buy single sprues rather than whole boxes nowadays?

British and French hussars had much denser braiding on their jackets in a very different style to the Prussian and Austrian hussars. I looked at doing it myself and discarded that idea after looking at the figures.
