I personally like the old Jim Bownen sculpts available fro Hoka Hey now:

http://www.hokaheywargaming.co.uk/Border%20Reivers.html

They're full of character. Personal taste of course.

I'm with Darrell here - they're lovely models, their only drawbacks being that they're a tad 'well-fed' and there aren't enough variations in horse poses. Anatomically, they're much better than the old Vendel ones, which had no necks. They also have a better mix of weapons - I always felt that there were too many firearms in the Vendel range.

What rules are you planning on using?

Absolutely no idea. So suggestions well received.

Osprey are bringing out some skirmish rules 'En Garde' in January which are supposed to cover 16th C - early 18th C. might be worth a look.

I hadn't heard that, sounds interesting. Do you have a link?

Not much info here, but it's a start: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=80328.0

I've only heard good things about Ronin, so this might prove to be awesome. I wonder if it can be played in 40mm...

There are quite a few free sets in the yahoo group, you could also use other skirmish sets, SOBH have a swashbuckling set of rules, Donnybrook would work well too, and I dare say sharp practice

There are additional rules and faction lists for Tudors and Reivers on the 'Lion Rampant' forum which look good. I'm also thinking of Sharp Practice, adapting some of the ideas from their WOTR variant.

And there are several rule sets including a nice campaign 'Hot Trod' ready to download from t'internet.

Hot trod and red hand were the set I used, written by mates and loosley based on chronopia rules mechanism

Captain Blood had a game of Border Reivers at the first BLAM (oh, my, THAT table  :-* ) for which he had adjusted a set of rules to good effect - try asking him!

And, if you manage to have anything playable ready, please bring it for Horisont, and I'll promise to attend wearing a belted plaid/great kilt!  :D
Ask at the LAF, and answer shall thy be given!

I hadn't thought that I'd be at horizont this year as I'm likely to become a dad for the second time around there. However, seeing you in a kilt would be amusing!

Oh, that's great news, anyway. Guess you'll have to miss out for this time...  ;)

So my birthday happened ;)

Osprey's Border Reivers 1513-1603 (and Osprey's 'The Border Reivers' on the way), George MacDonald Fraser's The Steel Bonnets, Alistair Moffat's The Borders, a good mix of Hoka Hey border minis and one of the crofts, and some Elizabethan swashbucklers from Foundry. Time for basing and painting. Then needing to get a few horse and cattle. Looking forwards to seeing Osprey's En Garde next year too.

As for rules, try Witchfinder General -leaving out the supernatural bits. However, if you're into the Border Ballads of the time, you might well want to include the supernatural.
