'Kelly's Heroes' 1/50 Sherman Tank ?
« on: 22 July 2015, 07:08:35 AM »
Hi, I'm a complete novice when it comes to WW2 so was wondering if there is anybody on this board that can help please.
What is the type of Sherman that is used by the main characters in the film Kelly's Heroes, AND do Corgi do a 1/50 scale version of that type ?
I remember seeing somewhere, at some point, that a manufacturer had produced some 28mm figures of the main characters (I think it was Artizan).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

If I recall correctly (?) they were post war Yugoslavian Army  shermans. A quick Google image search of the Kelly's Heroes shermans looks like a 76mm on a M4A3 chassis. There's definitely shots showing the VVSS suspension. I'm sure someone will come along to confirm or deny this soon!

Actually,  a further Google suggests that it is a M4A3E4, which would confirm the above.

Corgi do a number of M4A3 shermans and I've got the 76mm Easy 8 M4A3E8 but that has the HVSS suspension. I can't recall if they do a 76mm M4A3 with VVSS and a 76mm gun. The suspension systems do look very different but only if you know, so you could use the E8 as a proxy.

EDIT ".....looks like a 76mm on a M4A3 chassis"

IIRC it was a standard  M4A3 with a peice of pipe on the end of the barrel to scare the Germans
Would have thought it would have also attracted a lot of unwanted attention in the form of enemy fire?  lol

It's years since I've seen the film. You're right about attracting unwanted attention, especially when a number of 76mm armed shermans went to great lengths to disguise it.

Your in luck on the crew front, warlord is doing a Kelly Heroes set it would seem and it even comes with Oddballs crew: strange though for an instagram the pic quality is very mediocre.

Agreed! It's one of my favourite films too. I had Burning Bridges as my mobile ringtone on my old phone.

I need to watch it again for some positive vibes  :D

All these positive waves, we can't lose ;-)

His Shermans are 75mm ... remember he used barrel extenders to make himself look like he was up gunned (part of his pitch when doing his R&R gig).  It is the later war 75mm though as it has the square hull.  Don't know what you can do for the speaker ... I recall someone doing a great 28mm conversion somewhere .... I think they used a small brass bell inverted for the speaker ...

And remember ... I ain't locking no horns with a tiger ;-)

I'd totally forgotten that bit of the film. I have the Artizan Kelly's Heroes figures so I might have to stick a tube on the end of a 75mm barrel of one of my Corgi diecasts to accompany them.

Just checked this out; they look very nice. They're less caricatured than the Artizan ones.

I know! Isn't that odd considering it's Warlord games?!

Also, this is the THIRD version of Oddball in 28mm now.  ;D

Are there any versions of Oddball and crew sculpted to be put into hatches of tanks?   I would much prefer that over a dismounted version.

Not that I'm aware of, but you could possibly modify the Artizan one. The thought crossed my mind!

FWIW ... here is the picture of the 28mm model I was thinking of ... (don't know why that radio antenna is where it is):

I'm also fairly certain I could take the Artizan Oddball, cut out the Thompson ... cut him at the waste and mount him in a turret :-)
