citymap?
« on: 11 September 2015, 05:10:12 PM »
Hi all,
Since we're starting a frostgrave campaign I've decided to dig up my old castlemolds and some spare 1'x1' tiles I had from back when I played warmachine. So I'm going to build a modular ruined city 3 by 3.
I have no idea how I should do the layout though? Do I just want some ruined buildings? How wide should streets be to be scaled with 28mm mini's?
I've only done pretty blank boards in the past, never something "dense" if I'm using that correctly in this context?
I tried looking up old city maps to get an idea of older city layouts but that was dumb of me...

Unfortunately for games like Frostgrave (Mordheim, Infinity)'  when designing a terrain board, more is more.  Think multi-level, think taller than a miniature at minimum, think alleyways.  Follow the rulebooks guideline:

"Remember, the ruins of Frostgrave are crowded and maze-like, so there should be lots of terrain on the table, and there should be few areas where line of sight extends more than a foot or two, if that"

Here is a horrible pic of my 4x4 work in progress table:

I need some more elevated areas like the church, and bridges to span them (and ramps, and ladders, and makeshift platforms) before I feel it will be a good table to play on.

Take a look at this masterpiece, a modular Mordheim table:

I don't have a picture of the table I play on, but the density's something like this. The ones above are comparatively sparse compared to our boards, though we may go a bit overboard (during the last game I remarked that we needed more terrain actually... which was proven by the guy who took all archers - this game really needs the Mordheim 1/3rd of party max archer rule).

Though I'm currently working on my own terrain set which I'd set up something like that, but with perhaps more open spaces. Rather than using buildings to block LOS in those areas pieces like market stalls/ statues/ etc would allow for the city to not look massively cramped, but functionally be so.

Though yes having the odd tall building also helps, preferably not directly in one side's deployment zone or in the middle of the table so that they can't give too much of an advantage to archers.

I have found War Hounds to be a great Archer balancing mechanic.  Their speed can't be beat and even if the Archer is atop a building, a quick Leap spell will sort that out.
