I'm sorry, Frostgrave is too Mainstream...
« on: 20 September 2015, 01:21:37 PM »
... at least, that's what I kept telling myself for the past month or two. I've been searching for a game system with a high RP value, the possibility for 3-player games, and the chance to use whatever miniatures I want from whichever brand.

Over the course of the past few weeks, I've bought the PDF's for SoBH, Epic Heroes, and Otherworld Skirmish. All good rulesets, and all fill most of my requirements. There's no doubt I'll play each of them some.

For some reason, I resisted Frostgrave. But every time I was reading about small fantasy skirmish games, FG came into the conversation. So I watched a video battle report. I bought it on Kindle. I read it all in one go. I found the game that filled all my requirements.

By the way, my son had a requirement. He wanted to become a powerful Lich Lord.

Thank you, Joe. Thank you very much.

You're welcome.  I hope you and your son get some fun games out of it!

I'm sure we will. And my daughter. And a group of DnD players who I've been trying to proselytize into tabletop gaming.

There's a lot of RP potential in here. Without the need for trying to gather the entire group for a 3-hour session.

Any thoughts on keeping everyone's playtime roughly equal in a campaign? Maybe chart a set number of games per month, but allow everyone to play as many PUGs as they want without getting the XP and GC rewards?

Set one game a month as a full-on session, usual XP & treasure, and any in between games to a smaller reward. You could always limit the treasure on "between games" to perhaps  1/4 or 1/5 of the norm, or maybe roll after you get the box off, odds its empty, even its a small haul just 1/4 of the usual. XP might not be an issue - you're not going to risk valuable characters for an empty box.

Sort of on the lines I was considering. Also, if someone joins mid-campaign, everyone could take turns running an equal level band against him/her until they have the same amount of games as everyone else. That gets them up relatively equal* to the group and lets them see the play style of their rivals.

*relatively equal:they had the same opportunity to level as all else
