I wonder what they'll be charging for this?

Modular gameboards, 2x2' modules.....

http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/content/article.jsp?aId=10100005

Could be interesting, if you could buy one at a time at a reasonable price (yeah, right...)?

EDIT: Of course you have to buy the whole set at £150....... I'll make my own, thank you very much....

£150.00, un-flocked and unpainted. Whilst plastic gameboards are appealing because I don't like polystyrene I think the price is too high. Might pick up a second hand set if I see one though.

Watch out, if you are going to use them for Historical games etc, a friend of mine said the boards are littered with GW things like skulls etc. I suppose you could cover them up, but is it worth all the effort.

Given that you've still got to sand/flock/paint the things, I don't see how it's really any easier than taking a trip o your local DIY store and loading up on foam, plywood/MDF and such, and all for less than a third of the cost.

Of course, these will no doubt become the only "official" terrain you can use at GW events or in store, so all the kids will be suckered into demanding them from their parents.

Those little clips holding the boards together look very weak. They look kinda nice but I really don't see how they would be any better than they home made stuff. The extruded styrofoam I've got is quite durable.

Exactly my thoughts. The mandatory GW skulls ruined it for me when I saw them at the local store.  There are millions of the little buggers lurking about, not to mention femurs and other bits and bobs. It's like the ones on their recent, otherwise splendid, buildings. The profusion of skulls make them too much bother to convert to historical etc games:(

They also have large areas of flat granite-like rock strewn about, supposedly for use as old ruined roads etc, which also means more disguising work to make them really multi-functional instead of just for Warhammer/40k. You can also put the previously released plastic hills on top of the ones on the boards, to make them higher, but the effect looks a bit dodgy and unrealistic on the examples I've seen  :?

Apparently they may have more individual boards in the pipeline, with more hills, valleys, rivers etc, which may make the system more attractive. However, I get the feeling it's another opportunity missed, especially at £100 GBP [according to my son's White Dwarf, which is a bit better than £150] for a board that needs lots of work to make it battle-ready.

They are very sturdy, very light and have several combinations, but they could have been so much better. If only GW could ditch it's "must only be used for our games" mentality, which IMO is one of the major reasons they sell less stuff than they should, many more people would use their products. Apparently there are quite a few people about who have the nerve to play non-GW games.......

If I could afford this sort of terrain, I'd probably opt for the Kallistra hex stuff, which is more flexible and just as attractive IMO.

Oh well, back to green or sand cloths and polystyrene hills  lol

edit  The newish flocked cloth, however, is very good indeed and appears to be a lot more robust than flocked tiles etc. At £18.00 GBP for a 6x4 ft sheet, it's not to bad price-wise and is on my Christmas list. Much better than my sad old green cloth.

See, GW, are not all bad  :D

In the latest White Dwarf here's an article on this. There's a lot of talk about these little details (skulls 'n things); and how the board can be combined with the different plastic hills and other terrain features they're currently producing.

One interesting tidbit is that they hint at producing add-on pieces in the future, so I guess river sections and the likes might find it's way to the shelves in the future...

I was initially excited by this as I have limited gaming space and the they come with a carrying case. My friendly local got a set in and I am no longer excited  lol. GW managed to raise the price before releasing them and I have to say they do not appear to be all that sturdy in person. I was also turned off by all of the skulls and such.

Yeah, I'm sure I read somewhere that they have already apologised for printing £100 in White Dwarf when the actual retail price is £150. It'll be on their site somewhere presumably.

I've still got to wonder what kind of person thought it was a good deal even at the lower, incorrect price.

I know this wasn't directed at me, but I was excited in part because I was initially told they came painted.

Sorry, poor choice of words on my part.

I admittedly think that ready made modular terrain would be cool, and indeed it is.

Its just that even at the lower price I thought it was a rip-off, even if it came painted and flocked to the highest standard.

Remember, I am from the North, and therefore extremely tight with cash.  :D

No problem. I knew what you meant. I'm normally pretty tight with my money as well, but my impatience has been getting the better of me lately.

although the modular terrain is a nice aproach, specially for the ones who don't have much space for a whole gamming table!

but in the end there is always the need to use a big table (usualy the one in the dinning roon) to settle the modules on!

I think there is a better aproach, which are the game mats! there are a lot of companies selling those, they can be easily stored! One only need is a couple of terrain features stored in a box in order to have the minimum required for playing games!

Note: actually I have space for a gamming table, but it's not practical to have it ocupying usefull space all the time, and since my neighbour is a carpenter, I've ordered him a folding gamming table, I'll post pictures when it is ready

I think these boards are made for parents buying the GW Stuff for Christmas.
And it will work. Believe me.

Shop assistant "Ok Sir, now you have everything you need to play. The basic box, colors, brushes, dice, tape measures, army boxes. That is xxx quit."
Customer: " And all i need is a flat surface to play on ?"
Shop assistant : Well, yes Sir. You can use books for hills and cocktail sticks for trees. You can use all that but for the true Games Workshop wargaming experience you definately should have the tall men approved plastic clippers holded modular skull designed gaming surface. And its nearly for free. Just 150 quit. "
Customer "Uhh...ok I take it "
Shop assistant : "You like some GW stattic grass and glue too ? "

Cheers
Björn
