It really does remind me of parts of Scotland.  Very nice work indeed Steve.

Thanks Steve (I do love The Highlands  ;):D

The waterfall is great, and I really like the whole project. Looking forward to seeing more.

Many thanks  :)

Progress with the waterfall.....

To backtrack a bit, the objective with the waterfall is to show peaty water, atop rocks, flowing and falling at changing speeds with uneven turbulence.

The painted rocks show some base colour through the silicone sealant, while the sealant was dragged to create a sense of flow. Unfortunately though, it was missing grungy peatiness, while the lack of contrast between the silicone 'waves' meant that from a distance the suggestion of movement was lost.

Half of my remedy, now done, was to add paint effects using undiluted VMC. Firstly, working in patches, I painted Flat Earth over all of the silicone, then wiped away excess using damp kitchen towel. I then did the same but with Chocolate Brown to areas where I wanted more depth. For both colours, the wiping action followed the flow of the water with faster flowing areas having more paint removed. Finally, I drybrushed Off White to the crests, adding more where I wanted to suggest more turbulence.

The only problem with painting onto silicone is that it doesn't adhere particularly well. However, this will be addressed by the second part of the remedy.

So far:

The second half of the remedy will be to give the entire river a coat of Revell gloss varnish, which will seal in the paint and give the reflective sheen.

The next step though, is to add the final pour of the main river. I previously wrote that I'd add grey to this pour but have changed my mind: I'll just add less drops of the Mud Brown for a slightly more translucent surface.

There's still a bit of drying time ahead, as evident at the ford (note that the actual ford has much shallower water, obviously).

The texture looks about right Steve, the waves and troughs, rivelets and pools along the waterfall.

Your groundwork and rocks are really cool too 8)
Sadly after I thought that the waterfall looks a little like roasted chicken skin .. now I cannot see anything else lol ;)

The gloss and final layer should fix that. Maybe it could do with some additional 'white froth' at the bottom of the big drops? I really like how you have made the board so far Steve :-* :-*

Cheers
Matt

lol. Now I'm stuck with images of roasted chicken too!!!

I agree more white at the bottom though I'll add that on some Vallejo water effects that'll go on top of the final pour of the main river.

I'm still optimistic that the main flow will come right with the final layers but we shall see .... Fingers crossed !!  Trouble is, it's quite a waiting game as I have to wait for the first pour of water to dry before I can add the next.

That's not far off mate (I've seen a few peaty waterfalls in my time). I think a bit more depth and a few more lighter highlights and you've got it  8) 8)

Although now Matt has mentioned it, I can see chicken skin as well  :-I lol

cheers

James

James, my friend, you are right!  :D

More depth of colour is what it needed.  I've painted some thin lines of Burnt Umber into troughs between some of the waves plus brilliant white to some of the crests. Makes a real difference.

Cheers!!!

And some pics:

Extra turbulence will added at the base of the waterfall after the second pour of the river water, while the top coat of gloss varnish will make the waterfall and the river equally shiny. I'll also add waves etc around the rocks in the river using Vallejo Water Effects.

That looks WONDERFUL. The waterfall & surrounding ground are BEAUTIFULLY modeled & painted. VERY WELL DONE!
That is a terrain feature that has always daunted moi. As such I am even more impressed by your work.

Great waterfall you've done there, however I'm starting to worry how Matt and James roast their chickens!  lol

Cracking Steve! 8) Can i recommend using white silicon for the foam of the waterfall. Just wee bits here and there. Keep it rough on the highs, using a tooth pick.

That's a great tip Andy, I shall add it at the stepping stones, etc, as well.
