Progress with the waterfall.....
To backtrack a bit, the objective with the waterfall is to show peaty water, atop rocks, flowing and falling at changing speeds with uneven turbulence.
The painted rocks show some base colour through the silicone sealant, while the sealant was dragged to create a sense of flow. Unfortunately though, it was missing grungy peatiness, while the lack of contrast between the silicone 'waves' meant that from a distance the suggestion of movement was lost.
Half of my remedy, now done, was to add paint effects using undiluted VMC. Firstly, working in patches, I painted Flat Earth over all of the silicone, then wiped away excess using damp kitchen towel. I then did the same but with Chocolate Brown to areas where I wanted more depth. For both colours, the wiping action followed the flow of the water with faster flowing areas having more paint removed. Finally, I drybrushed Off White to the crests, adding more where I wanted to suggest more turbulence.
The only problem with painting onto silicone is that it doesn't adhere particularly well. However, this will be addressed by the second part of the remedy.
So far:

The second half of the remedy will be to give the entire river a coat of Revell gloss varnish, which will seal in the paint and give the reflective sheen.
The next step though, is to add the final pour of the main river. I previously wrote that I'd add grey to this pour but have changed my mind: I'll just add less drops of the Mud Brown for a slightly more translucent surface.

There's still a bit of drying time ahead, as evident at the ford (note that the actual ford has much shallower water, obviously).
