After good advice from fellow LAFers ....

http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=84859.msg1043356#msg1043356

....I've taken the plunge and started to add the growies to the terrain tiles.

So far I've merely added the mix of coarse turf and hairy grass but when the glue is drive I'll shake off any residual excess then add the tufts, plus some moss and ivy to the rocks, and the odd patch of gravel.

BTW I'm aiming for late summer/early autumn in the mountains.

My LAF Gallery is HERE
Minis (foot & mounted) finished in 2025 = 74
(2024 = 38; 2023 = 151; 2022 = 204; 2021 = 123; 2020 = ???)

Thanks folks - your comments are most appreciated  :)

@Richard: I have, of course, followed your advice and example  ;)  :D

I made some more progress this evening, adding moss, tufts, bushes, gravel and also some ivy to the abandoned fort.

Hopefully I'll have some time tomorrow evening to add static grass to blend various bits together and hide joins etc.

Thanks for the comments folks - they're always motivating!  :D

lol I was initially nervous as I'd not used coarse turf before and didn't want to ruin the tiles (and I just hate doing test patches), thus my question in Workbench. But, as you say, it is a surprisingly simple but very effective approach. The different stages take a bit of time though, waiting for glue to dry etc, but that's what central heating is for  ;)

I think mine will start to look a little bit different to yours as I get closer to completion. For example, I subsequently added scatter to the clump foliage bushes as I want a more gorse-like effect, and I'll also be adding more hairy grass. Your Cave Wars board is lush, as befits running around in the nuddy, whereas I'm aiming for a slightly less comfortable environment, as befits The North  lol.  Incidentally, i think I said before that I wanted to upgrade my WotR terrain and idc I intend to rebase the village etc onto 30cm sq tiles to match and use with GoT. Thanks again for the advice and encouragement. :)

Very natural looking terrain tiles Steve,  I like them a lot. The coarse turf has worked well.

Sounds good. Multipurpose, interchangeable terrain tiles for various genres are the way to go...
(As long as they don't warp, of course...  :o)

@Paul - I can say that as I'm a bit Northern  :D

@Richard - warping doesn't seem so bad at the mo but I have been asked where I'm intending to store this project !  :o

And so, the first six terrain tiles are finished. With the rules now prepped all I need to do is get the 20 each of Wildlings and Boltons painted and the Xmas game will be a go.  Obviously I have a lot more terrain tiles planned but this small section should enable some decent rules testing.

Fifteen images of the moors and outcrops of the The North, complete with an ancient, dilapidated fort:

(Unfortunately I struggled with the light while desperately trying to avoid incongruous backdrops!)

An overview of the six:

A Bolton and a Wildling slog it out (The horror! Unpainted lead!):

The next phase of the build will add a river with stone bridge and an Inn constructed from stone robbed from the fort.  The phase after that will add crags and a waterfall.
