Bug Hunts info?
« on: 28 October 2015, 08:20:30 AM »
I saw that Osprey's Bug Hunts game is now out, but I can't find any info on the game itself. Any of you guys who knows anything about it? I have a big collection of 6mm Aliens and Dirtside II humans so it would be ace to have a fast and cool game to play it with...but I don't have a clue whether this will fit the bill.

**EDIT**

DOH...just found out the book doesn't contain any rules...it's just a background book. Drats...

Which, going by the sample pages, is still pretty cool though...  8)

I'm rather intrigued by these new fantasy/sci-fi non-setting-specific "sourcebooks" that Osprey is publishing. Haven't read any yet, but I've heard they're rewarding enough reads for those who are into that sort of thing, which I am.

I'm waiting on mine (plus the "The Wars of Atlantis" one) so I'll do a review when I receive it.

Not a game. Made that mistake and ordered it with Black Ops. It's a fluff book, not rules.

Just so ya know.

Ok, received the book and read it in a day. I'll probably plonk it on my Sales thread soon.

I was not impressed - for starters, the layout didn't work for me. Instead of having each Bug "race" in a new chapter, it's a hall of text and if you don't pay attention to the paragraphs, you can mix them all together. The first race is an "Alien" homage, with boiling blood instead of acid one. There are Warriors; a Queen, Workers etc. A disappointment. The second Bug race are Tyranids with another name...they have organic weapons, travel in meteors, infecting planets and spaceships (space hulks anyone?). The third Bug race are basically the Bugs from Starship Troopers but some of their "leaders" look like Sandworms from Dune. There's also mention of incidents where Humanity fought other bugs and one those incidents is just the plot of the movie "Europa Incident".

The fluff about the Marines themselves is pretty lame and couldn't help laughing when the author goes to lengths to describe the importance of their bayonets (a bit like the Kukri) and how it can be attached to their carbines below the barrel, instead of the grenade launcher, but the illustration is a drawing of said bayonet on top of the barrel...

I won't bash it anymore. Just let me say that the old "Aliens: Colonial Marines Technical Manual" is way better than this.

I'm not bitter. Disappointed at myself for not doing my diligence perhaps, but I admit the phrase 'waste of time and money' passed through my mind.

Too bad. Admittedly I wasn't terribly interested in this particular book anyway, but I'm a bit more apprehensive now about some of the other Osprey fantasy/sci-fi "sourcebooks" which had caught my eye.

I have "The Atlantis Wars" to read but a quick browsing through it makes me think it's way better than this one.
