Black Ops review
« on: 07 November 2015, 08:49:11 PM »
The best thing that can happen to a wargaming fanboy is to get hold of a new ruleset prior to publication. This happened to me with Black Ops, the coming new release by Osprey Publishing. Unfortunately it took me several weeks to find the time to play it, as I eventually did at Crisis in Antwerp. So I completely blew my scoop! Despite of that, the game is defintely worth a review.

Nice review.
I have them but dont understand the save rules nor the observation rules. They both, for some reason dont make sense to me at all!
Tough save 4+
Normal save 5+

Can anyone gimme an explanation for those 2 things as its annoying the hell out of me!

Hi Dangerdaz,

I'm happy to answer any questions.

'Tough' reduces the save by 1. So a standard 5+ save becomes 4+ with the tough attribute. It is not a separate save.

The observation test should have perhaps have been called a camouflage or 'stay unobserved' test, as the figure being observed has to test. Remember in 'Black Ops' a minus is good, as it reduces your roll.
Let's take an example. A model in light brush and in the correct camouflage is in danger of being spotted by a guard at 14". The basic 'save' is 6+. Reduce that by one for the cover (-1), the camo gear (-1) and by the range (-1) gives a 'save' of 3+.

Hope that helps...

Guy

Interesting - glad to see one of the comments addressed my current question which is what table size is required or best for it? Looks like 3 foot by 3 foot should work fine.

Nice review - your observations align with mine.  I'll have a proper review posted on my blog sometime next week.

Thanks for answering that question, I had the same issue.  Once I wrapped my head around the fact that the lower number is tougher just means that it is tougher for the observer given that  it is easier for guy rolling the die to make his "Ignore Me!" saving throw.

Finally figured out how to wrap my head around this on the wound save.  "Tough" describes the dude making the save, not the difficulty of making the save itself.  A tough guy gets to make an easier save.
