'Holy War!' - Players Briefs, Part 3
« on: 22 November 2008, 09:01:46 PM »
Holy War!                     Von Stauffenberg’s brief

You are Graff Von Stauffenberg, world renowned archaeologist and German patriot.

You achieved immortal renown in donating the treasure of Alexander the Great to the British Museum (see ‘Iskander’s Gold’), so bringing the former mortal enemies of Germany and Britain closer together.  However you believe that the Fatherland has fully paid its dues and it is now time for Germany to re-take her place at the top table.  Two things matter in the new world order (the same two in fact that mattered before the unfortunate ‘disagreement’ in 1914): colonies and resources.  You have therefore been sent by the German Government to acquire the later and if possible, secure the former.

Adrianstan, under Adrian Enver Pasha, is the new emerging powerhouse in Central Asia, an area rich in oil and other natural resources. Germany sees him as a natural ally, as he is not aligned to any of the traditional great powers in the region (Britain and Russia). Critically, he is the only realistic bulwark against the gravest threat the world has faced in the last 100 years: Bolshevism. You have therefore been dispatched by Berlin with a small crack force to ensure that his regional ambitions are achieved and that Germany is seen to be a true friend and supporter.  In return he has promised rich oil concessions should he achieve his objectives.

Your chances of success have been increased of late with the discovery of Kasredin, the new prophet.  This has stiffened the resolve of Adrian Enver’s troops and has made them a potent attacking force.  He is keen to unite Kasredin with the Emerald Koran (rumoured to be held in the central mosque in Krasnavodsk), which will result in Jihad being declared.  Though you are uncertain of the long term ramifications of this move, you are keen to make the most of the short term opportunities.

The one fly in the ointment is your ammunition situation.  You are a long way from home and resupply is difficult.  Your troops will therefore go ammo low on a throw of one on a D6. If no single throw when firing (e.g. infantry) throw an additional dice.

You can fix this by taking the Arsenal in Krasnavosk.

In addition a German U-boat is operating in the Caspian Sea (don’t ask me why!).  You can make contact with this if you take the radio station in Krasnovodsk.  In addition to having its own armament, it will be able to provide you with limited ammo resupply, some additional troops and in event of an emergency, be able to ship you and some of your troops away.

Your objectives                     victory points
1.   Capture the city of Krasnavodsk                1000 pts
2.   Capture the Anglo Persian oil fields intact                       750 pts
3.   Capture the port area of Krasnavodsk                          500pts
4.   Discover the Emerald Koran                             500pts
5.   Should things go against you, successfully ‘rescuing’
The Emerald Koran for the Berlin museum of antiquities                                  250pts
6.   For every Red/White unit destroyed by your forces                    150pts
7.   For every 10% losses from your force                         -250pts

Forces under your Command
Von Stauffenberg: +2 officer and marksman
2.I.C. (Von Teuffel): +1 officer and marksman
10 Brandenburg storm trooper Grenadiers, ferocious with bombs.
Includes 2 LMG’s and one flamethrower.               T5 M5

10 Von Stauffenberg Jaegers, stubborn with bombs, 1 LMG,
marksmen                           T5 M5

10 Von Stauffenberg Askaris, with bombs            T4 M4

1 Von Stauffenberg Horse artillery.  Motorised 75mm gun      T4 M4

1 HMG                           T4 M4

1 Erhardt Armoured Car, 1 MG                  T4 M4

1 A/A gun, mounted on the back of a lorry            T4 M4

1 Von Stauffenberg Adler Company.  Motorised dirigible.
8 Adler troops with bombs, ferocious, Bergmans, 2 LMG’s      T5 M5

Intelligence

1.   Emir Bin Gun Loafin is a corrupt eastern despot of the worst kind.  Slavery, corruption and moral degeneracy (and worse!) are the norm in Krasnovodsk.  His forces are weak and ill-disciplined, and equipped with outdated weaponry and equipment.
2.   The Emerald Koran is used at Friday prayers in the central Mosque.  Its whereabouts when not in use is unknown.
3.   There are reports of a French military mission in Krasnavodsk under a Lt. Draylon, sometime adjutant to Count Pierre Smirnoff
4.   The White forces are advancing from the south, though rumours of dissension in the ranks abounds.
5.   A large Red force is advancing from the north.  They may have naval units. They certainly have air units.
6.   It is believed in Berlin that the Anglo Persian Oil company is a front for British Intelligence.
7.   You have a good working relationship with Adrian Enver Pasha.  However Germany comes first, so have no truck with outcomes that do not align with the strategic aims of the Reich.

Holy War!                  The low down on Krasnovodsk

Background
Krasnovodsk is a sleazy frontier town on the edge of Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia.  It has been largely ignored during the chaos of the Russian Civil War and the ensuing breakdown of law and order.  The leading actors in the region have had bigger fish to fry these past few years and so Krasnovodsk has become a haven for all the bottom feeders in one of the roughest towns on earth.

Town Factions

1.   Emir Bin Gun Loafin
The town is nominally run by Emir Bin Gun Loafin, a petty eastern tyrant of the worst kind.  He has taken advantage of the emergence of Adrianstan to set up his own petty Turkic fiefdom in and around the town.  In reality he runs a municipal extortion racket, which admittedly he does efficiently, having scoured the area’s natural resources of oil and Beluga caviar, as well as extracting large ‘taxes’ on the various trade routes that have passed through this region for millennia.  All the usual cancerous trades associated with Civil War are traded through his network of thugs and killers:  guns, drugs, prostitution.  You name it, he’s made a turn on it.
Forces:
10 x Patriotic Guards (red coats, fezs), stubborn, with bombs, 1 LMG   T3 M4
10 x ‘tax collectors’ (civilians), SMG’s, no bombs            T2 M4
10 x Mongolian mtd police (use Chinese cavalry),  1 LMG         T3 M4
1 x HMG (use Chinese one)                     T2 M4
1 x field gun (no firing pin)                        T2 M4
Key Assets:
Central bank (bullion and Emerald Koran in its vaults)/radio station/port complex (beluga caviar stored there)/armoury (French surplus and ammo)/central Mosque (emerald Koran)/train station
Bin Gun Loafin is either in the armoury, mosque or brothel.

2.   Lieutenant Draylon
The French government, always with an eye to a quick buck from the world’s tin-pot tyrants, has sent a commercial mission to offload some WW1 army surplus.  Draylon, ADC to Count Pierre Smirnoff, is in charge.  They are also keen to spread their influence in the area for grander geo-political reasons.
Forces:
Lt. Draylon, +2 officer, marksmen
10 x French Colonial Marines (use old glory German figs), bombs, 2 LMG’s   T5 M5
1 x HMG                                  T5 M5
1 x bullion truck                               T4 M4
Key assets:
Bullion (from ‘trade agreement’ and to buy favours)
Military hardware: 2 field guns, 2 HMG’s, 1 heavy mortar; 1 pre1917 tank, 1 armoured car (all in armoury)
Throw a D6 when activated: 1-5 bust.  6 works as normal (keep throw secret)
Based in camp on the outskirts of town

3.   The Caspian Anarchist Collective
Under the command of Mad Brian, a pottery worker agitator and British army deserter from Stoke-on-Trent, they are based in the town brothel, where they finance their anarchy through ‘sponsorship’ of the ladies of the night.
Forces:
10 x anarchist’s, bombs, 2 LMG’s, stubborn (use IRA figs)         T4 M5
1 x HMG                              T4 M5
10 x professional ladies                        T4 M3
Note, the anarchists will always try and protect the women before themselves
Based in brothel

Superb!
A nice action film to be performed by beautifully painted models.

I am eager to see the photos!!!

[A small point: as alternative to german colonial marines you may have used French colonial marines by Dixon's or French fusiliers marine -perhaps by Foundry- to add a little more colour!

Turcomans: please note the new comers of Tiger Miniatures, should be lovely and would add a little more spice as bodyguards and mercenaries for the locals or Enver pasha]

As always, good suggestions!

My mate Rodge has a full 1920's colonial French army, but he was a late call off therefore we were - for the first time- short of the right figures...eeeek!, and therefore had to call upon stand-in/extras.

The Tiger figures, you are right, are beautiful.  However I've 140 odd Foundry NWF and Darkest Africa ones already painted from some years ago.....even I have to draw the line sometimes!!!

Hope you like the photos when the emerge from the diabolical laboratory of Dr. V.I. Blackwood!!
