Good points size for Black Ops
« on: 06 December 2015, 10:19:48 AM »
Gentlemen,

I played a game of black ops last night. 50 points of conscripts versus 50 points of professionals. The board felt a bit big.

Is there an ideal points total for a standard game on that size board?

Any suggestions gratefully received.

How big was your board?

I've played a couple games on a 24" by 36" board - conscripts versus special forces - and it was over quick.

It was 4 by 4. I actually was reading the rules last night and saw that stand up fights are meant to be bigger than stealth games. About 75 points apparently. I'm an idiot.

Nah, you're not an idiot.  Show me the man who says his first play through of a game got every rule right, and I'll show you either a liar or the game's designer.  We completely shanked on a few rules in our game, and after rebuilding the forces with an excel sheet it was obvious that our point totals were off by something like 15 points.  That's more than 20%, so not exactly minor.

I generally play on 4ft square boards, as any objective will be no more than 3 moves away. Scenery is a very important aspect of Black Ops, boards should not be empty. 50 points is a good starter for a Stealth mission.

I've known games where Spec Ops have been gunned down one by one and games where the conscripts have charged forward to their doom. Tactics is generally the key - people tend to play like they do in 40K and wonder why they lose many men, or just have an unlucky game. I had one where every save was pretty much a '1'.
