Painting other skincolours then caucasian using vallejo?

So, fifteen years of painting and all caucasian models.
Mainly due to the fact that I'm painting mostly european inspired fantasy models, but there's some laziness in there too.

I now have a model I really want to be a black person and some asian inspired mini's on the way.

Does anyone have/know some nice tutorials? preferably using vallejo paints (which is mainly available to me)?
Most I find on the interwebz call for old colours, either vallejo or GW.

Well, like I told you in person last week; I used my caucasian recipy, simply darkened with scorched brown*.

So, a gradually lightening mix of Vomit Brown and white. Deep shading with a watered down Snakebite Leather and some colour added on the cheeks and or nose by adding the tiniest amount of red or pink into the mix.

For darker skin, I add Scorched Brown (or maybe chocolate brown or another brown) to the mix, and do my deep shading with a very watered down black paint (not ink, because of control). For Asian skin, I mix in Bubonic Brown instead of Scorched Brown.

Works wonders for me...





* Disclaimer: I used the old GW paint names here as they're sort of hardwired into my system after several decades and I can't be bothered to look up how they are being called this week. Nowadays though, I use Vallejo equivalents almost exclusively...

I did some soul searching and am now about 97.4% certain that this is the correct recipe.

Checked my painting notebook, but sadly, I did not record that particular one...

For sudanese skin I have used a 50/50 mix of Vallejo Black Grey and Chocolate brown followed by a highlight of just Chocolate brown with some good results and I usually was with a watered down sepia wash also. Hope this helps.

I'm an equal opportunities painter, so I've been doing it for years. I can paint black figures as badly as white ones now and that's equality.

For asian skin for me Foundry's Canvas and the old Citadel Flesh Wash are the key ingredients. They give that warm yellowish hue which is spot on IMO. For example:



It follows a simple recipe:

Citadel Foundation Tallarn Flesh (VMC Brown Rose)
Citadel Flesh Wash (VGC Skin Wash)
Foundry Canvas 8B  (VMC Flat Flesh)
Foundry Canvas 8C (VMC Flat Flesh + VMC Light Flesh)

Mjup! Painted it for my pulp games.
Dark skin is also very easy IMO:

*Basecoat VGC Charred Brown
*Shade with a black wash
*Highlight with VGC Beasty Brown
Optional: Second highlight with VGC Cobra Leather (or VMC Golden Yellow, depending on the hue you're looking for)

I've used Cavalry Brown for this chap, it gave a nice deep & warm colour -



And Flat Brown on this guy for a darker complexion...

That's a nice link. I'll keep that for future reference. Just hope that all the colours are still in production. Vallejo stopped producing many of their skin and flesh tones.

I've got my recipe for now.
As Daeothar I've added charred brown in my usual mix and some 50/50 with black in the shades.
I'll be sure to keep tips in mind for the asian skintone as I'll be needing this later this year.
