Star Wars - X-wing - ongoing queries!
« on: 05 January 2016, 07:39:12 PM »
I've long admired the X-wing models and wouldn't mind a different type of game from our regular skirmish games at 28mm (especially as table set up seems relatively straightforward. I've watched a few game play videos of X-wing and it doesn't seem to be as superficial as I first thought. Armada appears to be slightly more complex, primarily due to the requirements of the capital ships.

The question is, for a fun game that offers a reasonable level of tactical choice and rewards good play,  doesn't require a huge amount of rulebook referencing during play, and feels like Star Wars, what would people recommend?

Thank you!

I haven't tried Armada yet but have watched some videos and it certainly looks more complicated. Just tried X Wing last week (the basic rules only) and found it to be pretty straightforward, with optional complexity (custom squadron rules, advanced pilot abilities, etc.

I'd go for X-wing mate as Hupp mentioned, it can be played quite simply or complexly depending on your mood  :)

I like to play simply, because I'm special like that  ;D

cheers

I will say, locally, X-Wing seems dominated by long term players; there's a certain 'having the most cheese' factor, as well.

Still, does seem the more straight-forward play. Play with as few upgrades as you can and still have balanced play, for as long as you can.

James, you're a gamer; I suppose we'll have to live with that... lol

I will say though, my dad and his clubmates seem to have plenty of XWing stuff between them so I haven't bothered buying in, because I'm not a competitive gamer so if someone has extra stuff I have no problem using theirs.  :D  I on the other hand, LOVE capital ships (ROTJ was my favorite as a kid because of the space Battle of Endor) so I bought into Armada a bit; I'd like to play eventually but if I don't like the rules, I plan on just using the models with a simplified Full Thrust Star Wars mod I found on TMP a while back.  :)

Wow, thanks for the quick response guys. I suppose it's really an excuse to get the ships, with the fact that they're pre-painted a bit of a bonus in terms of time. I can always tinker with them later. I was a big fan of Full Thrust and X-wing reminds me of it a bit. I still have a load of various ships in a box somewhere including a load of Battlefleet Gothic stuff I got dirt cheap years ago.

There is definitely a certain lure to those capital ships too though!

Why did you have to go and post this question?
I have been thinking the same thing for years (well, since X-Wing came out anyway...) and have avoided asking the question so I dont make a choice and therefore can keep pondering.

Now I may well go and join in the madness at some point too.....

Damn you!

I just had a quick scan on eBay and it would appear that X-wing is one of those things that is way more expensive there than you can buy from a shop. It looks like 4 or 5 ships a side is a reasonable amount for a medium sized game, does that sound about right?

We must have posted about the same time. I seem to remember a conversation with you, Rob and Tom at BLAM about X-wing and us both saying we rather liked the look of it! I think the new Star Wars film may have pushed me over the edge  :D

I played X Wing in March 2014. I loved it, promised to buy it as an 'end of session / map campaign move' filler for other periods. Forgot that promise until counting up myChristmas vouchers for Amazon.

A week later, I'm in for two starter sets, a Millennium Falcon, a Y wing, a Tie Advanced, a Tie Interceptor, A Y wing, A Slave 1, an additional X wing and another two craft currently on ebay. Not to mention a £50 6 x 4  play mat called Star Birth.

It's a good job I'm not buying metal this year (added £2000 to it last year), or I'd say X wing was a God damn money pit.

See you on the Dark Side.

I did see it as an occasional game so wouldn't be looking to spend a great deal on it (the famous last words of a wargamers!).

Would people go for the original starter set or the Force Awakens one?

I'd recommend going for the new 'Force Awakens' version.  It has the now standard 'damage deck' which everyone else is expected to convert to.

Thanks,  useful info.

I'd read on Boardgames Geek that the T-65s from the original set were not so useful now that the T-70s were out but that might be for competitive games. I'm only interested in playing for fun though so it's probably no big deal.
