I'd go for X-wing mate as Hupp mentioned, it can be played quite simply or complexly depending on your mood  :)

I like to play simply, because I'm special like that  ;D

cheers

James

I'm with Jim.  I've only seen Armada being played and there are a lot more 'moving parts' it seems.  X-Wing as the others have wrote is pretty scalable.

I've played both games and they're quite different beasts. I think they've managed to get the differences right.
X-wing plays fast. You make the decisions mostly on the turn. it's a really relaxed game and our go-to at the moment.
I've played armada only a few time. You really need to plan ahead and I think the game requires more from the gamer.

I prefer x-wing. But that's personal taste and not because armada isn't a good game.
Both can get rather expensive but can be played with a smaller collection. I find it easier to ad a single fighter to my collection as the armada ships get more expensive fast.
Even so, x-wing drains most of my hobby money of late, but I'm not regretting it.

So what do you prefer? Quick thinking or longer planning?

Personally I like both,  but my group would probably prefer the quick thinking, fast play route.

I bet it can get expensive but my birthday is coming up and I'm getting asked what I'd like!

Very cool freighter mod!

I just searched on eBay for 'x wing force awakens' and there was a guy selling 3 new copies of the core set for £21 with free postage. I didn't see it before on the same search so it may be new on. He has 2 left!

Nah, it's not gimpy enough for him  ;D

You do realise of course that you'll end up getting both at some point anyway...  ;)

Just checked again and all the X-wing Force Awakens copies at that price seem to be gone.

I've seen a few tutorials on making your own star gaming mats but it's not entirely clear what material people are using. For example felt is mentioned many times but there's wool, acrylic and polyester types. Some people seem to be saying that felt should be avoided (alright,  one American guy did!).  Neoprene is also mentioned as is vinyl. Does anyone here have experience with making their own X-wing mat?

I just picked up the Gale Force 9 mat.  For 30 bucks it was cheaper than making my own...

Painted mine in two sheets of 2x4 MDF mate. Ok if you have the storage.
