Thanks for the advice Mr Tough Guy. I suspect the draw of the huge ships is partially the ship models themselves.  They just look cool!

OK, another dumb question.

I'm only interested in playing for fun so I'm not bothered about amassing the most killer cards available but i still want enough for a decent game. This brings me to the dumb question: for ships that I'm likely to have more than one of would just buying certain ships without the upgrade cards or pilot cards be worthwhile? I'm mainly thinking ties and x wings here but possibly a scum ig-2000 with the intention of purchasing the full expansion at a later date with all the cards.

I am playing X-Wing tonight, 2nd game with a newbie.
To keep the fun high and the difficulties low I just picked three ships per side with no upgrade cards at all.
Worked fine before. After a couple of games all can start to add upgrades etc.

But honestly - I had some of the best games with 2-4 ships and no additional cards at all...

So I am strongly for getting two starter sets and maybe one or two additional ships you like and just start playing.

For casual play you don't really need the upgrade cards or pilotcards, it's just the ship and the basecard (and even that you can proxy if your opponent doesn't mind)

In fact most of the time I just build a list in one of the squadbuilders and print that of, I think I've only actually used the actual cards once during play, and that was when I was running 3 large ships without any upgrades

But yeah most of the upgrade cards are available online in the x-wing wiki or in one of the squadbuilders, so unless you play tournaments you don't really need to have the actual cards

You were all right.  It was a bad idea. I already have too many ships (no, not enough!).

They're just so cool and they want me to buy them. I'm calling a halt for now without venturing down the Scum route. I would, however,  still like a Decimator, a Punisher and a shuttle for the Imperials and a couple of Y-Wings for the Rebels. It's addictive trying to find the best prices online.

I also fancy trying to use stuff I've already, got such as my Old West boards, as planet surfaces for scenarios along the lines of 'destroy the comms centre/hq/refinery,  etc'.

Actually,  I think I have 5 (3 FO and 2 originals), an Interceptor,  Advanced and a Phantom. I got the cheap Rebel Transport by the way!

Well we can't all make our own like some people!

My counter now stands at 51 FFG models and about a dozen from other sources (which I still haven't used). Only yesterday I played a 300 points Epic game with Voivoid; three huge ships were involved and it was a tense and fun game (even though I actually had a fever which persists to this moment  ).

Believe me; you can never have enough X-Wing ships. Never!

That's the best faction, a couple of Aggressors, a couple of Firesprays (not that Imperial Rubbish  ) & the Scum & Villiany box or two (then everything else at least once [well maybe not the M3 interceptor] and your set  )
