[COMMERCIAL] Sci Fi Terrain Project
« on: 13 January 2016, 04:38:47 PM »
Here are some first shots of some terrain that I am working on.
Initial designs by Steve 'Elk101'
None of the pieces on this layout are glued together, you can glue if you want for speed of set up, or you can leave unglued so it all flat packs away.
Many, many more pieces in the pipeline together with a range of furniture and fittings to match.

Essentially the idea was to create a kit of parts that could be used to create a colony set up, a Citi-Block interior, a spaceship interior,  an underground base,  etc. It was based on what I wanted for my own games but Chris has come up with some great improvements and additions. It's obviously flat as that's the nature of the material but the idea of the surface lines is that they provide a modicum of relief, a guide for painting differentiation,  or a guide for further embellishments in card, plasticard strips, or balsa, etc. The addition of a few squares of card, plastic or acrylic in the wall sections would make it 'pop' more. These could all be designed in, but as Chris explained to me it's all additional laser time and additional cost.

I'd add that this was originally just my own pet project but Chris has been extremely enthusiastic about it and taken it beyond my original ideas. I know mdf terrain isn't to everyone's taste but personally I'd be keen to game on this.

Great. Could use them. For SW I would take more ice design

This is just what I've been waiting for. Looks like it'll be ideal for my long-planned "1970s moonbase"

Nice!
The detailing really does bring in another dimension and, as you say, easy to add more 'bits' to it for even more realism.
 8) 8) 8)

The only down side is that those pictures are rather distracting as my pile of SW bendies is calling to me for a wash and spruce up....DAMMIT!

It only took about 2 hours one evening to Army Painter dip and re-base on clear bases 74 minis which is enought to get started with SW gaming using Pulp Alley or 7TV for example.

I'm hoping to get initial sets costed by Monday.

A lot of CD stuff, yes (astronauts, moonbase crew, timelift security, scientists) plus any other vaguely 1970s-ish "clean and shiny" sci-fi I can find ... which are few and far between, it must be said.

Out of interest, what sort of playing size do people want? I would like at least a 3' x 3' layout for an Aliens game, Judge Dredd and zombie/PA.

I'm definitely in, since I've been batting around the idea of a sci-fi successor to Shoot N' Skedaddle, and I wanted modular stuff so I could simulate space ship boarding actions etc.  If I were selling them, I'd sell them in a number of smaller packages...a couple rooms each for a reasonable cost - let the end consumer decide how big he wants to do.

Basically a few rooms to a pack...and a couple packs of different hallways (floors of different sizes/shapes).  Eventually perhaps even some accessory packs (a bridge, interior furniture, engine room gubbins, a jail area, etc.

PS: What's the system for holding the doors up?  Just small tabs of MDF?

EDIT: I was just looking at your kits/walls/doors...I'd definitely do random rooms but create a label/name for each type of door.  For example, a small door might be Door A, and a large door might be Door D.  That way players can glance at kits "hmmm, this is a room with two Door A's..." and know how to buy the kits to match up with whatever they've purchased.

You've pretty much hit the nail on the head Elbows. I wanted a system that I could create whatever I wanted with rather than what the manufacturer said I could make. The question about size of set up was more to do with overall size and associated cost. I was, for example,  interested in one of the card system Kickstarters for sci-fi corridors but the cost of a decent sized set up put me off. I then saw a few mdf ones but they weren't what I wanted as they were corridors with rooms that seemed to replicate Space Hulk rather than allowing for the sort of layout I wanted. My original plan was to draw it up and build it out of foamboard but once I had the drawings I asked around about getting it laser cut. People are exceptionally busy though and it wasn't until a fortuitous discussion with Chris at BLAM after Mason had mentioned it to him that things developed.

Very cool...I do hope there are some skinny claustrophobic corridors planned to add to it (ventilation shafts, service hallways etc.).  Can't wait to see where this goes.

I'd also love to see a few angled pieces (namely some slightly v-shaped rooms so we can put the nose on a ship, or tail of a ship etc.).
