Thanks all for the great replies. It gives me moral courage to once again enter my local craft store and suffer the stares of those wondering what a grown man is doing carefully pondering their bead collection...

I digress. I thought you'd like to see how the squadron is shaping up. I have now converted five ships of the line and just now undercoated them. My goal is to end up with a full squadron of around a dozen ships. So here's the tally so far:

The 38 gun HMAS Cerberus is the heavy hitter. I quite liked having the space on this one to incorporate the large balloons atop extended funnels. This was closer to my original vision for the project.

This is followed in size by the HMAS Lord Clive at 30 guns, which sits in design in between the smaller cruisers and the larger cousin, with unmodified bowsprit.

Next the sister ships HMAS Perseus and Theseus at 24 guns apiece with purpose built aerial rams.

Lastly the bombship HMAS Khartoum with it's trial floatation lift device. It carries only 18 guns but a complement of 'new technologies' such as aerial flame cannons, magnetic mines and conventional dropped bombs.

And here's a pic of the lot awaiting the admirals orders for the jack tars to begin paintwork...

I should have some painted pics in a week from now together with our battle report. No, it will not include aerial squid but we will be writing new rules up to test more outlandish weapons. In the meantime here's the link to where to find the ship models if you're interested (they're under the Triton 1:1200 Ironclad series). http://www.skytrex.com/

Oh, and I think that the balloon sail will be a deep red...

The only viable option should be a good darkish blue with a 200ft Union Jack!  :-[ ;) lol

I totally second that!  :)

Oh yeah? you and whose ar..
Oh..forgot you have about 200 Prussian dirigibles. Ye gods man when do you sleep?

Sorry to dissapoint but I've plumbed for Martian silk (you should see the size of those silk worms) which is a strange greeny red. But there will be union jacks somewhere..

Thanks for all the great comments. Now I need to get back to the painting table and finish them before Wednesday. Battle report to come. I think it's Rabbitz turn to write it up..now that he's run out of:
 a. Prussians to paint and b. table space to play them

I would love to see this massive Prussian aeronavy. Perhaps you could snap some intelligence photos or use your operatives to get us some?

May I ask what you used for the balloons. I see some beads (I think) but what are the larger shapes?

Thanks,

They are actually all beads. As you're in W.A you can pick them all up at Spotlight. The larger beads are wooden (metal would just be too heavy) and the smaller more ribbed ones are hollow metal. Specialist bead shops will be better stocked and have more range.

Jammed Gatling,

Are you in WA?

The answer is yes..and no. I'm in Western Australia

Sorry, looked at your address and thought you were too. Still, I imagine they sell beads in Washington? Good luck in the hunt.
