Shadowrun (ral partha) project, work in progress
« on: 04 February 2016, 09:23:01 PM »
Hi,

Finally, following this thread :

http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=70918.0

I started to paint some figures, with some mercenaries warves, a decker orc, a cyber zombie and a street samourai human. All are metal figures from the great ral partha shadowrun range, and still work in progress.

The decker (about 60% painted) :

The street samurai (80% painted) :

The dwarves (about 30% painted) :

The cyber zombie (about 50% painted) :

I'm trying to paint them in a "graphic" fast painting style, my goal is to complete a group of minis in a week, on night (rare) hobby time. So the effects are pretty straight forward, just like the way I'd paint some 15mm or 20mm figures (basically, a base color, a shade wash, 2 or 3 color highlights, and a few old school black linings when needed).

It's a very fun and quick project, especially because I can try these funny bright colors I have and never use for anything else  lol

Very cool! I like the decker in particular, even though you say he's not finished?

I don't know either the Shadowrun game or range, but I'll be investigating these figures now :)

Cool miniatures, i'ts a shame so many of RP's range were in 25mm. I had the Cyber Zombie too, great figure but a little fragile with the thing third arm on his back. I thinkc the character Hatchetman from the SR canon also had such an extension (and also became a Cyber Zombie).

The painting style is also fitting. It reminds me of the colorful schemes Jeff Laubenstein used in his illustrations.

Good luck with your project!

 :o

But that is the best thing about them....

The proportions are perfect, weapon sizing exact and the differences between humans and the various metas truly rendered.
The real shame is that there are so few other ranges to match with them ;)

thank you all !

Concerning scale, as long as you don't use 32mm or bigger figures, using thinner or thicker bases should solve any problem ;)

I was also concerned with the cyber zombie sturdiness, so I added reinforcement steel pins in the figure back (where the cannon arm is installed) and in the cannon itself (where it joins with the cannon arm).

I forgot to mention that I started every figure with a black primer, followed with a zenithal light brown "wetbrush". This wet brush is usefull for 3 things : place the light (nothing fancy, just a classic zenithal lightning), also make a "warmer" color base (since the black primer tends to "mute" everything), and finally make the figure sculpted details easier  to see.

Awesome!

I've also been doing a Shadowrun side-project. Love to see someone else working on similar minis.

Did you rebase/cut off the bases of the dwarves and cyberzombies?

Not for the dwarfs, they have been glued directly on the washer, including the integrated base. But yes, some of the figures are based directly on washers, when some other ones kept their integrated base : this way I've been able to "cheat" the sizes diferences, when needed. Here's some examples :

Shadowrun is a mix of classic fantasy and cyberpunk background. Long story short, it's a world of mega corporations (often directed by dragons), mixing ancient human magics (like asian, aztek or native american legends).  Elves, dwarves, orcs and trolls, and of course humans (and a lot of other side races) all working in the shadows as freelancers for the megacorporations (as thieves, hackers, detectives, or simply as muscles or assassins).

Add the classic cyberpunk items (cyberspace, cyber enhancements, huge megacities with terribly unbalanced social background), a bit of post apocalyptic stuff too (like chemical or nuclear wastlands, mutants, etc...), and of course all sides of magic (invokers, combat mages, shamans, etc...), and you have the ultimate geek dream  lol

Wow man, LOVE the way you paint them. High contrast, rich colors, great style. And Cyberpunk too...! :-*
Can't wait to see more.

thank you !

The only issue is the scenery : because of the 25-28mm scale, it will take a lot of room, and time, to build enough terrain for interesting urban skirmish. But that's another story  lol

Oh I hear you...Cyberpunk is not the easiest genre for scenery. Takes lots and lots of stuff. It feels like you never have enough and always need to add more and more details and clutter.

Plus the overall "theme" you choose is important. Do you go with a clean, hi-tech, corporate centre table or somewhere rundown and almost post apocalyptic in the Barrens. Or take a more generic Bladerunner style and take bits of both?

Wonderful variety of options with Shadowrun as if you are using the Tribal factions you can incorporate out of city scenarios too.

One of my favourite ever games.
