Lets talk about Beastmen...
« on: 11 February 2016, 10:31:44 PM »
Or perhaps the lack of them?

I've decided that currently the biggest threat to my fantasy setting is going to be a uniting of the Big bad Beastmen hordes who have suddenly banded together and are now descending from their vast icey wasteland homes to smash the lands of men to the south, with the possibility of a quick detour to give those Barbarians, Demons and Undead a good smacking whilst they're at it.

I've been looking for some Broo other than Games Workshops stuff that I could use to liven up the Horde, so as to speak. I have loads of GWs more recent offerings, they are very cool bulky monsters so I've Gors and Ungors will be the 'footsoldiers', some figures from Mierce miniatures will be acting as the Elites/Allies and leadership roles.

Sadly however outside of Mierce and Games Workshop I can find very few other Beastmen, many are very old Citadel figures that look like they are in various stages of decay.

Are Beastmen (lets say Broo for the sakes of conversation, the Ram headed beastmen) not a popular fantasy race? Is GW the only company thats ever created a decent sized range for these fellows?

Does anyone know of any other Beastmen/Broo I've missed?

I think you're not searching for the right things.

What are you looking for, exactly? Goatheaded humanoids? There's a lot of variety in what a "beastman" could be.

As an example, Khemru from War Gods:

Foundry have a range (now available on their Casting Room Miniatures site) - it rather divided opinion when released, but some of the sculpts look quite characterful and meet your purpose.

Fenris Games do a growing range of Broo types as Ian is a big fan of RQ.

Gary Hunt Miniatures available at Zombiesmith.Make sure you click on the minotaur heroes there are actually three of them.Oh they are about the same size as the  GW metal general characters so don't let the minotaurs  name fool you.I love them, mixed them in with a bunch of GW metals for my Mordheim warbands.

Avatars of War make a cool hero.

Black Tree make some too ,I don't have any of them so cant recommend them, but they look pretty GW compatible.

By the way, Brummie, if you settle on these I wouldn't mind splitting postage to get some of the duck miniatures. :p

Yeah, I'm stoked about the Gnolls - excellent decision for a plastic set too, since they don't exist en masse by most companies (unless you use the rather large Reaper ones).

Not cheap, but Rackham Confrontation minis might fit the bill, if you can find them on ebay. They did some nice fomor which are basically daemon/beast/men, there are wolfen too (not really goaty I guess). Gnolls look a good bet, depending on the sculpts.

Thanks Chaps!

Ram headed (or even sheep headed) is primarily what i'm gunning for, although since there are so many that fit the 'mongrel' bill I may make an auxiliary unit for them to act as cannon fodder, or even as civilians, chars for RPG's set in a Beastman settlement in the Wasteland.

Those Midlam Boarmen would be great as a minor allied unit, and with some of the larger 'wereboars' on the market for beserkers could make a nice skirmish force unto themselves!

I have loads of the Wolfen (and Devourers) and plan to use them as a separate force opposed to the ram headed variety. They are lovely models, my favourite of all the Confrontation stuff.

I've seen those Gnolls as well, will be getting them at work when available, but I see Gnolls now as being worthy of their own force, likely for a different setting. Whilst I can see Wolves and Ram headed types populating a vast harsh wilderness in freezing snow ridden setting, Gnolls are Hyenas, so I will probably have them more for a Fantasy 'Dark Continent' Not Africa setting.
