Seawolf Sophie Smith and friends aka US Navy in 28mm
« on: February 16, 2016, 01:57:59 AM »

These are the results of my inquiry a year or so ago.
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=75457.0

The bodies are by Empress, the girls head by Statuesque & the male heads in hats are by Mad Robot.

All the castings were super clean and a joy to assemble and paint, and all three of these companies were excellent to buy from.

Move out!

Shewolf and her devil dogs to be painted up soon.
Thanks for looking.

I gather you are a John Ringo fan? I was until this "Black Tide Rising" crap ...worse 4 books I read in a long time. His obsession with teenage girls is getting out of hand  :?

But your figures look really nice. Never thought that those Mad Robot heads would fit Empress bodies! I always assumed that their heads were more for the 40k conversions (bigger than normal).

Yes, the inspiration was from Ringo's Black Tide Rising series.
I haven't read a lot of his other work, but the the Missus and I both really enjoyed his Princess of Wands/Queen of Wands books.

Thank you.

I thought so to, but they were the only heads that I could find with that hat. While not perfectly sized with the bodes, they are close enough that I can live with them. I tried my hand at sculpting the hats on smaller heads, but was unhappy with my ham fisted attempts.

You should also try (if you haven't done so) his Posleen Wars books: https://www.goodreads.com/series/43106-posleen-war

And the Looking Glass series: https://www.goodreads.com/series/42762

These were the books that made me love his writing...until he ruined everything in these last works. But those series are good military sci-fi.

When I look at the pictures, I think that they fit perfectly  lol Good work!

The Statuesque & Mad Robot heads worked out pretty well on those figs. And you did a Great job painting them up.

Wow!

I actually have those heads, but never tried them on Empress - As above mentioned, most bits companies cater towards the Heroic proportions and thus are slightly too big for "true" 28mm. But scale id a whole other discussion ;)

Good job on the painting aswell, they are easily recognizable and very well done.

If you are looking for more heads for conversions, I recommend looking at "www DOT puppetswar DOT eu" - They make some really nice andvery detailed sets.

I did a quick review here: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=85621.0

Nice work.

Helpful post as it resolves the question as to whether the Mad Robot heads fit with other 28mm ranges. Seems they do. That opens up quite a few possibilities for me.

Excellent work on the Navy Working Uniform camou!!
Always puzzled me you could be swept overboard, then be hidden by the sea, & die unrescued...

Still your capture of the look of that hideous nautical fashion faux pas is simply outstanding!!
It's almost as if they held a contest to see how much less like sailors they could look..

Dungarees & chambray shirts will always typify USN working dress for me...

I thought so to, but they were the only heads that I could find with that hat. While not perfectly sized with the bodes, they are close enough that I can live with them.

Ya hafta look real close to see the disparate noggin size, I think they blend nicely.
Which size Statuesque did you use for Sophie? She might be a wee bit petite.
Not that that's a bad thing, yet I'm more used to seeing slight women swallowed by all their battle rattle, rather than just the fire-proof cloth of the female uniform, tawdry as it is.

I tried my hand at sculpting the hats on smaller heads, but was unhappy with my ham fisted attempts.

I wouldn't worry about it much, they look good together, all iron jawed & grim.
& everyone knows pre-sewn 8 point covers are only issued in Size 7¾ & up.

Given the hour I may be over-searching for flaws...  Yeah.  That.

Nice work.  Helpful post as it resolves the question as to whether the Mad Robot heads fit with other 28mm ranges. Seems they do. That opens up quite a few possibilities for me.

Agreed!!   & I do enjoy dealing with Mad Robot, clean efficient transactions.

I really like this lady, & her lads, a good, clean, tough, cohesive crew,
a landing party to be reckoned with.  Meddle at your peril!!

Bravo Zulu Amalric!!

They look really good;  I didn't realise they were conversions at first.  The heads blend perfectly and a really good paint job.

I think you've done a bang-up job on those. I had to really stare to see that the heads looked slightly larger... but having said that proportions are supposed to be three heads from neck to 'bend line' (iirc), so maybe I'm more used to seeing figures with small heads. If you hadn't said anything I wouldn't have even noticed.

Everyone, thank you for the kind words.

I believe the head would be sized to that of their fine scale line, as it came from Statuesque's figure pack Mei-Lin Mayfair 2.0 [link below]. I chose it because the hair is in a bun that I thought looked like that worn by military women.

Valeric, thanks for the great pics.
I agree, that Wave looks sooo  :-* much nicer in jeans.

Always puzzled me you could be swept overboard, then be hidden by the sea, & die unrescued....
I agree. Why I like it though is because it is instantly recognizable as US Navy and distinguishable from my US Army troops in ACU [link below] and the Marines I'll hopefully get paint on soon.

So I might be out of the loop, but what is the "Seawolf Sophie Smith" from if any thing?
You should also make a security detachment with helmets too. To you know, support the USMC, inspect suspect vessels, and to look with inversely at the SEALS as they get ready to go on another mission.  :D

She's a character from the Black Tide Rising series by John Ringo.
