Wars of the roses Wip
« on: February 16, 2016, 08:21:23 PM »
Hey guys.
So I've been looking at all the awesome work on the forums for a long while and have never actually posted anything. Today however, I decided that I may as well do just that. :P I do hope it's in the right place and all that jazz.

A few months ago I picked up some wars of the roses  figures from Perry miniatures and have started painting somewhat.

Test mini kinda.
Front.

Back

Hope the pictures aren't too big or anything. I'm not too proficient with all this just yet.

Rich.  :D

Thanks for the swift and kind response  :o

Quick update before bed. I painted 3 more billmen and built some extras, they're all pretty generic as i'm not too confident in my conversion skills, one day perhaps.

First up, the 3 new additions to the band. I think I need to work on them a little as something seems to be missing or incomplete, just not quite sure what. ???

Here we have the new bunch of guys. I'm really liking the perry plastics, a very cool kit to work with.

and just for fun, a quick photo of my dudes taking a stroll through the fields.

will try and work on them a little more tomorrow.

Rich

A good start.  You can get a lot of realistic poses by mixing and matching the various bodies, arms and heads, without having to do much conversion.  I find the key to getting good poses is to ensure the head is positioned in a sympathetic manner to the pose, i.e. looking along the firing line or matching the head to the angle of strike with a bill.

Yes a good start.  :)

What I like about the Perry figures is that depending on how you assemble them, they can tell a story. Take the three unpainted pikemen above. The middle guy should be to the right of the photo, as he looks like he's giving an order or berating someone to his right. The guy on the right could be him, as he looks like he's trying to get into step or something (every unit has one of 'those guys')... the third of the trio looks a normal solid and relaxed kind of soldier.

Ah I never really thought of that while building minis.  :? Though now that it has been said it makes a whole lot of sense.

It's not really a consideration when you've 30+ minis on sprues sat there and happens by accident for most of us. Somebody else could look at those three and say the middle guy is bitching about the guy to his left, it's how you perceive them as an individual. Captain Blood and one or two others decide on a theme and then go looking for the parts to achieve it (or so I imagine).

Some people just build them and paint them without a thought... there's no right or wrong.  :)

Totally agree with Gary's point here. Getting the attitude of the head 'just so' is the secret to bringing these figures to life. Just sitting it levelly in the socket and facing front, is rarely the best choice. Looking up; looking down; looking to one side or other; looking quizzically at a tilt... Try all possible angles before you glue!
I also always add a fragment or two of molten sprue shavings into the neck socket. I find this helps the head 'sit up' a little bit better, and also conceals any unsightly gaps  :)

You are off to an excellent start.
You can't go wrong with advice from Captain Blood,
he is the master.
Look forward to seeing more figures painted.

Really nice work and very useful for me as I just ordered two boxes simply because I saw the thread by Capt. Blood! Well worth a look at that thread for inspiration. Again, very very nice work

Thanks guys I will definitely give it some thought when assembling minis next. Shamelessly used some unpainted versions last night in a game of Age of Sigmar, contrary to popular belief it was quite fun. Today I will be trying to paint some.

For now I have these chaps.

and an obligatory back shot

Hope you like.

Hey guys. So I have made a little progress with these guys.

Here are some new additions to the group. the metal just needs a highlight which i forgot prior to taking the photo, oops. but will show how they look soon. Edit:realised I need to do quite a bit on the plate armoured guy... my bad.

And a group shot of the lot so far.

They will be split into different "units" once I have more of them done.

Having quite a blast doing these.
