Are zombie games over done?
« on: February 19, 2016, 09:32:39 AM »
Hi guys,

as an avid gamer I am a bit ashamed that a whole genre slipped under the net and became popular without my notice.

I have recently been developing my own rule set for a zom-pocalypse style game, persistent campaign yadda yadda.

Then I noticed this sub forum...

How did so many zombie games rock up and I didn't know?

The question is, are any of them any good, to the point where I would be wasting my time developing my own set?

What say you?

Jay.

I think it's a very pertinent question.

People seem to think that there are a lot of zombie rules out there, which there may be, but I haven't found any that suit me particularly well. I'm holding out for the Warlord Games one personally.

I've been kicking around my own ideas for a solo ruleset and the idea of a persistent campaign is pretty important to me. What have you got in mind? I'm intrigued!

I myself have not found a set I like myself...I guess I`m after something slick, supported and sexy....Like colour, nice pictures to set the mood, easy to play with depth for a campaign, build your own hero etc...solo too.

So....Mantic walking dead as I`m liking the rules, loads of scope to design your own stuff and can be used for any zombie style film/Tv show.. And of course need to know more about Warlords too.... A preorder Has gone up on there website, D6 with Icons, around 25-35 weapons, and it looks like 4-5 stats for hero`s I`m guessing 1 or more dice per stat...

Just want I make out in the pictures.... But This year it may be good for zombie games to step up and shine.....

Thanks for the heads up about the pre-order Soulman, I hadn't seen that yet.

I actually agree about the Mantic rules, I was expecting not to like them but they aren't too bad. I just don't like the miniatures that much.

There are a LOT of zombie board- and cardgames but actually I don't know all that many zombie rulesets for the tabletop.

I have had a lot of fun with All Things Zombie so far. I tried the GASLIGHT zombie add-on once, but that didn't feel too special.

This http://theminiaturespage.com/boards/msg.mv?id=324596 TMP link mentions quite a few that I had never heard of.

But there are always people that will jump on a new wagon because they don't like something about the existing rulesets or simply because it's a new wagon  :D

Thanks for the replies gents.

I will keep plodding with it then, I'm not looking to pitch this or anything. But perhaps just knock up a PDF rule set and just dish it out or something. Early days.

I tried a few Zombie rule sets before settling on ATZ. Works fine for me. Feels like a movie in the way it can quietly ramp up the tension.

Yes, Zombie games are overdone (and largely over hyped).  They tend to suffer from one dimensional gameplay and very quickly become repetitive and predictable.

The horror aspect that is such an important part of the movie genre is totally lacking in Zombie game rules.

True. That's why ATZ keeps its appeal for me. Like the designer always points out it's not particularly a zombie game, but a modern skirmish with RPG elements that can also feature zombies. But you might just as well play bank heists or black ops missions with it.
