How often do you have a clear out...
« on: February 20, 2016, 04:10:46 PM »
... and then regret it years/months/days afterwards?

I'm sure I'm not the only one. I've just gone and bought a copy of WI from last year which I originally bought, and then got rid of just at the start of this year as I went through yet another purge on the grounds of tidying up!

It occurs to me I also used to have a large number of Musketeers figures which I then sold on ebay on the basis that I was never going to use (having spent quite some time painting them that is) - now I'm looking considering En Garde and asking myself why I sold them.

Granted, usually when I clear things out it's so I can buy new goodies (plus I start to run out of storage space).

So when/why do you clear out? (Or not?) Can't just be me thinking I'm a wally for having sold x, y or z and not foreseeing the possibility I might want them in several years' time!

As often as life events dictate.
Stuff is only stuff; there are few items in my collection which will never be sold - and there are few items which I've ever regretted selling. If something has served a purpose, even to let me know that the project had no desire after I started or collected it, I've learned something and gained something from it and it can be sold gratefully.

Over the years I have had many Stalinist purges on the lead mountain. My biggest worry has been if it all came back where would I put it all ???? Despite having parted with lots. & I mean lots, I still don't have any space.

I've done big model clear outs twice. Both times I regretted it in small brief moments, but never in earnest. By which I mean, two years or so later I might get a hankerin' to fondle that one expensive OOP kit I got rid of, but it's always a momentary thing. The next day (or even the next hour) I go back to not caring and being glad I don't have all those models I'll never build taking up space.

One of the reasons I dropped larger models in favor of gaming minis is because all this sort of hoarded old faff can fit in a lunchbox instead of taking up an entire closet. When I hear about gamers who have legit storage problems with their lead pile, my mind boggles a bit at the sheer number of individual models (and purchases) that implies.

The only purge I legit regretted was throwing out a few bins of accumulated kitbashing parts and materials. That became a sore spot later when I had to build some sci-fi stuff, and found myself with very, very little in the way of options. However in hindsight I still feel that was for the best, as the models IMO turned out better for it, in much the same way that genre movies sometimes benefit from restrictive budgets (it forces creative problem solving, which focuses and refines the final product). And going forward, I recently decided to start saving for a 3D printer, so while that's gonna take like a year or so to happen, it'll ultimately eliminate the need for kit/trash/toy bashing, so I'm feeling pretty secure about throwing all that stuff out.

I've only ever sold two models, way back when I started, and regret it to this day!

I have a big bag o'stuff I want to sell.
Occasionaly I add to it if I'm really certain I will never do anything with that model ever.
Any doubt and it leaves the bag.
It's mostly OOP stuff for games/races/systems I don't play or modles I've newer versions off.

I've never regretted replacing old stuff with new shinies.

As and when I lose interest in a period.

Books are more the issue for me. They are too easy to buy and harder to sell.

I'm currently going through my collection to do my first ever clearout.

Regret is something i'm wondering about, so far, too many mini's end up on the 'useless-but-don't-want-to-sell' pile.
