Which Gripping Beast, Perry & Fireforge Box Sets?
« on: 26 February 2016, 01:00:25 PM »
For use with Frostgrave, what is your favorite box set from each of the following companies?

1) Gripping Beast
2) Perry
3) Fireforge

I am working on an order with thedicebaglady.net -- she seems to have everything.  I'm getting the official Frostgrave soliders box set from her and I'd like to maybe get a couple more box sets from Gripping Beast, Perry and/or Fireforge at the same time -- so I need some help deciding thanks.  (Decided to skip on the Frostgrave cultists for now since I have yet to play the base game.)

I found that the Gripping Beast Plastic Viking Hirdmen and Saxon Thegns work very well amongst the Frostgrave Plastic Soldiers. I also used some of the Fireforge Plastic Templar Infantry, which also fit in well. I used a few Games Workshop Plastic Bretonnians as well, and although they look a little bigger when you scrutenize them closely, on the gaming table they fit in well.

I also have the Fireforge Templar Infantry which I'm happy with. Lots of different heads (some hooded) and separate cloaks which can be mixed with other kits. If WYSIWG is important to you these models have mail armour so are an easy way to add Marksmen, Knights and Templars to your collection.

Third for the fireforge templars. Very versatile kit, includes lots of weapon options, heads and cloaks. Just be advised that the FF heads have a flat join point where the frostgrave heads have a ball and socket joint. I also recommend the Fireforge Foot Sergeants. The best choice for the Perry Miniatures kits would be Wars of the Roses Infantry 1450-1500, bows and bills. Combining the extra FG arms with the WotR bodies will get you some nice FG soldiers.

To answer your question about sprues from another thread:

Frostgrave Soldiers box is 4 identical sprues of 5 figures each.

Frostgrave Cultists box is 4 identical sprues of 5 figures each.

Fireforge Templar Infantry box is 2 identical sprues of 10 figures each plus a command sprue with 4 figures and lots of extra bits like hooded heads and cloaks (note that there are no round bases in the box just some square and rectangular ones).

I have used Gripping Beast Arabs to mix with the Fireforge miniatures for arms without mail armour and bows.

Wargames Factory Persian miniatures work well with Fireforge miniatures for the same reason.

Thanks for the replies.

How do you guys handle this?

I like the Fireforge Teutonic Infantry set.  The knight helms look more fantastical and there is a proper, non-helmed hooded head.  The only problem is that they aren't heroic scale like the Frostgrave Soldiers.  Their weapons are smaller and their bodies are smaller, although part of that is because the Frostgrave Soldiers are wearing winter gear.

I really like the fireforge foot sargeants. They look a bit more organised but they mix awesomely with frostgrave plastics

I've used all of those so far...here are some kitbashes for a dungeon crawl.  These are Gripping Beast Vikings (wonderful) and Fireforge...infantry of some sort (can't recall).  They work perfectly together.  I only recently grabbed some Frostgrave plastics, so I haven't mixed them in.  You're good to go with all of them.

Heroic scale needs a 30mm base right? I was hoping all these box kits including the Frostgrave one would easily fit on a standard 25mm base.

What size base do you guys use for your frostgrave games?

If I went with the viking hirdmen, that's 44 soldiers with chainmail.  Looking at the Frostgrave manual not many have chainmail.  Hrm..  Maybe I should just go with 1 sprue of hirdmen?  Or is there another reason besides the chainmail to get 44 of them?

All of the models from the plastic kits mentioned easily fit onto the 25mm round plastic disc bases.

Do I really need the Official Frostgrave Soldiers kit?  Or can I do with say a box of Viking Hirdmen, Saxon Thegns and Templar Infrantry?

The fact that the heads are ball and socket vs flat concerns me.  Can the ball part be cut off the Frostgrave head easily and adhered to a non Frostgrave box kit?  and vice versa?

If you guys could only buy two box kits, whether it be official Frostgrave or GBP, FireFOrge & Perry..

which would those two be?

I am overwhelmed to be honest.  I have like 4 or 5 box kits in my cart right now on thedicebaglady.net and it's getting close to $200.
