Alright, finally some action!!!

Here's the mounted Bannerman:

and 2 of the bodyguards for Lord Medgar:

The Bannerman is finished in terms of the models paint job, he'll need the actual banner though and of course I'll base them all together once completed. The 2 Bodyguards horses are finished and just some highlighting on the riders armour and a few small bits to clean up before they too are ready. After that its the last of the Bodyguard and the man himself, Lord Medgar!

Cheers

Thanks for the comments chaps! Happy to finally be able to spend dedicated time on this again!

Last night I finished off the 2 bodyguard models:

The remaining 2 are already undercoated and I'll start applying the base coats tonight!

Stay tuned for more!

Love the sorrel coat of that nag.

Thank you!

Quite an easy, but effective colour palette, Vallejo Neutral Grey prime, Vallejo Cavalry Brown base coat, first wash with a mix of Vallejo Black Red, water and glaze medium, then add successive layers of wash into the folds etc. Re apply the Cavalry Brown to the raised areas and then highlight by mixing Vallejo Medium Sea Grey with Cavalry Brown, building in more Grey where you need more highlights and to finish off I applied a glaze of the Cavalry Brown base coat to smoothen out all the layers and tie it together.

For the last two horses I'm going for a Dappled Grey and a mixed colour Roan, references are:

The base coats have been applied, next I'll start filling in the secondary colours, such as the brown on the Roan and the dapples.

Cheers

Despite a propensity for liking cavalry-based armies, I have a bit of a thing about painting up cavalry. With my GOT forces, opting to field multiple houses makes my choice of cavalry painting schemes somewhat difficult since just a 6 house force would seem to require a minimum of 18 cavalry to field just a mounted captain, standard bearer and MAA. Otherwise a 6 horse unit seems a little odd with 6 different liveries and sigils. Your approach is very refreshing and makes me want to tackle my cavalry backlog. Well done and some lovely horse coat choices.

You are not alone with the daunting prospect of painting Cavalry, the first one took far too long so I switched to a more logical approach of blocking, shading, reblocking, highlights and glaze, it sped up the process without me having the feeling that I'd compensated in quality in any way. Pictures are a MUST for references! Horses are tough to paint as theyx have large flat areas that if over highlighted can look akward, as we are used to painting humans/humanoids with all their lovely folds and shadows we can become somewhat afraid of flat areas, but just paint it as per the picture, some areas need no shading or highlights and this will balance off nicely against the areas that do require these, but a real reference picture is your best friend here :-)

I still wouldn't paint a full Mongol Horde though.........  :o o_o lol
