New Hinterland
« on: 11 March 2016, 10:53:54 PM »
Hi All,

I’m delighted to announce some new releases at Hinterland Miniatures:

To complement the last round’s Schutztruppen camel riders, I’m most excited with the Schutztruppen – Skirmishers pack:

Fighting alongside the Schutztruppen are the Askari, this time with some firepower:

To provide leadership, we have von Lettow-Vorbeck, in both mounted and on-foot versions:

Finally, I’ve had the Camel Train pack’s seated figures re-sculpted just the slightest bit larger to be more in-scale with other Hinterland offerings.  Correcting an existing pack wasn’t the best way to allocate sculpting funds, but the previous figures were just too small and it was either redo the camel train or dump it entirely.  I hope you agree I made the right choice:

While Paul Hicks did the Askari pack, Alan Marsh is responsible for everything else.  I’m delighted with how Alan’s style matches previous Hinterland releases.  Do me a favor and tell all your friends about the quirky world of Hinterland Miniatures.  Feedback is most welcome.

         Jason/Mancha

Oh, my poor aching wallet. You know I'll be buying these ladies, it's just a matter of when. My Askaris need a Maxim, and my camels are a bit lonely. They look great Jason. Expect to see an order from me soon.

I have these figs ready to prime and paint, just have to determine a color scheme for the trim and base it on a flag (using alte fritz period flags).  I hope the firing figs and command pack come along soon. Probably use extra command packs to command my askari units as well.  My imagi-nation is based around the Hinterland figs along with a few female ACW types from Brigade Games and a unit of Eureka SYW females as Imperial guard.

My colour scheme for the ladies is taken pretty much from the Afrika Korp, with those greenish-yellow tunics and khaki skirts (in this case, since the Korps definitely weren't wearing skirts), and sun-faded sun helmets, which start off as khaki but get dry-brushed to a buff or creme colour. With all the projects I have going, I really need to start painting my tail off. Sigh, a hobbyist's work truly is never done...

These are great!  If they were in a size/scale I used they would be on the buy soon list.

Fortunately for my storage space and wallet they are not.    lol

Thanks for the positive feedback.  Some Schutztruppen firing figures are coming up next.  Popularity (ie: sales) of these figures will probably determine if I do a command pack.  I'm also thinking of doing some mounted figures, but we'll see.

Beautiful additions to the range, as always. My wallet may be lighter but it is money well spent!

I was curious what books or other research material you might have used or other LAFers can recommend for a complete neophyte regarding German African colonialism. I'm a big fan of kniwing the real histories behind the fanciful miniatures I'm painting. Thanks!

My go-to website is German Colonial Uniforms. Be warned, you'll spend hours here:

To give him an idea of the "flavor" of the troops, I also sent my sculptor, Alan Marsh, some covers from the magazine Unter Deutscher Flagge, which Plynkes very helpfully posted in this thread:

These covers have been a great source of inspiration.  I have some favorites:

If I do a command group, would it be too over-the-top if it included the two at the center of this picture?

Finally, I also Googled "Schutztruppen Camel Corp" for some great images and prints.

Hope this helps.

Yup, I came I saw I purchased. My Schutztruppen force and my Askaris are getting some new minis. Time to load up on khaki paint.

The schutztruppe would also be useful as the 'Amazonian' company of the Canadian 62nd Regiment (St. John Fusiliers).

That had occurred to me as well, although they're not flouncy enough in the shoulder-sleeve area.

That's easily remedied with a bit of greenstuff (although I might not even bother, TBH).  Put down my vote for a command pack as well.
