Casualties 1st and 2nd Afghan War?
« on: March 22, 2016, 06:26:49 AM »
I am chasing British and Afghan 28mm casualty figures for these conflicts. Any recommendations out there? Grateful for any advice!

By figures, I think the OP meant 28mm miniatures, not the number of casualties in the war itself.

Foundry make some useful figures for Afghans;

Out on my phone or would include pics & links, but in addition to the fine choice above I'd add the Old Glory Pathan Wounded and Pathan Dead packs, both of which I believe come with 15 figures apiece.  Some Old Glory figure ranges can be an acquired taste, but I think their North-West Frontier range is one of their best.  They also have dead and wounded British (including kilted Highlanders) and Indians for the Second Afghan War.

Thanks for your advice,

I could not find any OG wounded British for the 2nd war only Indians. What range where they in?

I found ASB-28 British Casualties  i the Sikh Wars range - could these be suitable for the 1st war?

The ones I was referring to are in the Old Glory 25mm Boer War range, but yes, the Sikh War British casualties would be good for First Afghan War as well.

To make the poor casualties a bit more scenic. What melee weapons would it be appropriate to stick into them? I know the pathans used swords and knives but would spears, or maybe arrows, also be used?

If we're talking 19th Century and you want to stay historically accurate... not really.  But you could have some impaled on lances, courtesy of Anglo-Indian cavalry, which is virtually same as spears.

Good idea! I guess also the Afghan tribal horse used lances?

I have a somewhat long and deep interest in the NWF in general and the Second Afghan War in particular, but am still no expert, but I've never seen visual or written description of Afghan tribal cavalry armed with lances, as opposed to swords and shields and firearms, but of course that does not mean it was never the case.  The Afghan regular army of the mid to late 19th Century is an even more particular interest of mine, and I've never seen or read of lance-armed cavalry in their ranks either...  but lack of evidence does not make it impossible.

Mad Guru,

Thanks for your help. Seems nobody told the Afghans about the spear/lance thing  :)

Anyway, I have now ordered the OG casualties: Pathans, British (Boer War) and the British (Sikh Wars). I will post some photos once they past through the looooong painting tunnel
