Potawatomi indians
« on: 29 March 2016, 01:04:41 PM »
Men wore tanned leather breechclout , flaps hanging down to the knees in front and in back. They were often decorated with quilwork bans on the bottom edge.

Length leggings, in deerskin, thigh length fringed down the side seams and geteres below the knees. These often had quillwork down the sides in front of the fringe.

Unseamed pieces of tanned skin were worn for shirt after contact with the white. They decorated their garments with quillwork in geometric designs and with dyed moosehair in modified floral designs. Bearskin and buffalo skins made up winter robes as well as other small animals. Again rabbit skins wee woven together so that fur was inside and out.

The warrior shaved their heads and wore the roach (described in the Ottawa men) during times of war. Tuft of hair from front to back. A single eagle feather was oftenadded at the back.
Moccasins were soft soled and one piece with a seam up the front fron toe to instep covered by a decorated band of quillwork. Cuffs were very large and pointed in front extending almost the ground and with the designs symmetrically opposed for each cuff, like those the Miami.

puches and shoulder bag were made of small animal pelts sewn together. Often the tail of the animal was worn near the nappe of the neck.
Larges gorgets hungs fron the neck as well as several necklaces made from native copper, beads and shell. Bracelets, amlets and pendents were also worn.
Pierced ears were worn by both sexes a long with nose rings.
Warriors painted the upper part of their faces in red and black paint. Black and red were painted around the eyes. maybe black around one eye and red around the other, or both ringed either red or black.

Thanks for posting them. It is always good to check out the historical artifacts for inspiration.

So, do you pronounce them, Pot-uh-wah-TOE-me...

Or, Pot-uh-WAT-uh-me...

I use the first pronunciation, but only because it simply sounds more Native American to my ears. I could easily be wrong, or there could be a third pronunciation.
